Re: PayPal Debit card with 5% categories?!

Oh wow, I missed that someone got around to testing Costco.com for Groceries. That's been on my to-do list for awhile! This is truly the BEST Groceries category option card out there!

Does it work for Costco (in store) as well?

How about Walmart+ online? Does that trigger the 5% under Groceries?

Can't. It's a Mastercard. Costco only take Visa in-store. Yes for Walmart+ in my experience (also superstores and neighborhood walmarts... NOT for "regular" walmarts).

Costco accepts MC debit cards.  I use my PP debit for 5% back instore at Costco all the time.  I've never had an issue with getting the 5% at any Walmart location either.

Really? I've never tried, since they advertise Visa only. Good to know!!

Guessing all of your Walmarts count as at LEAST Super Walmarts then, because I tested at 3 very different Walmart locations to confirm. They "basic" Walmart was fairly ghetto and didn't even have self-checkout. I made two purchases there, one with PayPal debit and one with SYW card, which I knew would tell me the MCC code used (it came up as "discount store", and did not give credit, whereas the ones that code as either supermarkets or "markets etc" DO count.)

Re: PayPal Debit card with 5% categories?!

I will be curious to see whether there is any issue with using it in a digital wallet. (My card is set to Groceries, but P2's is set to Restaurants and is the one that does the Costco shopping).

I've had no issues with Google Wallet, using it at several different places for groceries.

Some stores require me to enter my PIN and some don't, but that's to be expected with a debit card.

For those planning to use this debit and balance account often, here is a trick:

Add funds to your PayPal Balance with CB debit, pay CCs not listed in billpay with PayPal routing/checking on the CC website/app. Of course, this depends on if the debit card you use gives CB for adding to your balance (not just PayPal billpay). IME, some do (Affinity CB debit, Axos CB rewards checking), some don't (Primis perks).

This can work for any bills (even rent, mortgage) that only accept routing/account numbers as payment. Just make sure you turn on "enable payments" in the account & routing screen. The challenge here, however, is finding a debit card with a large enough CB cap to cover all your non-CC expenses.

Not sure if this is asked deeper in this (long) thread : but this process mentioned here : could one open a Discover Checking account, which gets you 1% on spend and would reloading your PayPal Debit card using your Discover checking/debit card trigger the 1% cash back too? (re-reading the thread again as I wait for a reply Smiley LOL)

I think Discover specifically excludes any PayPal transactions from cash back to prevent you paying yourself or others.  Funnily enough loading cashapp works fine though.
