Hey guys, sorry if these have already been asked, but I have a few questions.
1. How much spend do you typically need to put through a month on PCR in order to get a CLI? Also how often do they do CLI?
2. Suuuuuuper random, but if I have a PCR with a high limit and I'm also interested in the Platinum Rewards is there anyway I can use some of the credit limit from PCR to obtain a Platinum without actually having to apply for it and go through a hard pull? If that makes sense.
Thanks!
1. No idea. Not often.
2. No. If you want a new account, expect a hard pull.
I'm told that if you have a preapproval for it, it's a soft pull... but I haven't seen any pre approvals yet.
Good luck!

1. There's no such thing. If you want a CLI you can follow the "offers"; sometimes a CLI is offered to you.
2. No there's no such thing as getting another credit card without having to apply for it and get a hard pull.

I thought the ones in the offers can come as either a CLI or new card? In which case they are both soft pull and you're not really "applying" for it. I've seen some people here post on it, but not very frequently and I'm not sure of the minimum length of time they've been a cardholder wtih PenFed. I'll confirm I've seen nothing so far, but it's not even been 3 months.
And there's definitely cards you can get without a hard pull (Amex, some other CUs).
1. Amount of spend for a CLI is not as important as other factors such as your credit profile, income, and DTI. I don't believe there is a set timeline for customer-initiated CLIs. Auto-CLIs are rare; preapproved offers for a CLI are less rare although YMMV on them being offered.
2. No. As already stated having a preapproved offer for a card in your account will usually not result in a HP, but new products cannot otherwise be opened without one unless they are reusing a recent pull. Credit line reallocations are possible, however.
Maybe they don't like me, but I've been told on two different calls that as of a "couple months ago" they no longer do credit line reallocations. Please let me know if any of you have had or heard of recent success in doing a credit line reallocation.
Let's get down to brass tacks. Do you have any recent denials for either CLI or new accounts with PenFed that are leading you to seek this information? Are you asking ahead of time to try to preempt any reasons for denial that they may try to throw at you?
PenFed has been surprisingly generous to me with my middle-600's, LOL/24, dozens of inquiries, and only 22 months (at the time, now 27 ) of paid-as-agreed. The only things I had going for me was strong income and 0% revolving utilization.
I was approved for not just the Cash Rewards with a $5000 limit, but also the Platinum with a $5000 limit not 6 months later. If you haven't already gotten denials (again, I don't know, I'm just speaking to both outcomes) I'd pull the trigger and find out.
I'd also like to have someone chime in with any recon numbers in case you do or did get an initial denial.

I know I'm piggybacking off of the original question, but if I received a Pre-Approval letter (set APR) from PenFed for the PCR, does anyone know if I'd be just as likely to be approved for the Platinum? Or do you have to start with the PCR w/PenFed? Thanks!

You received your pre-approval letter because you met PenFed's criteria for a new line of credit. Yes, it is safe to say you are as likely to be approved seeing as PedFed does not appear to set different qualifying criteria across their advertised revolving products, kind of like AmEx is with their charge cards. If we were comparing a Visa Signature with a Visa Infinite, or comparing two different lenders, I'd say no.
The reason I wouldn't try for the Platinum with the same confidence is that you have all your terms (APR, namely) laid out in front of you for the PCR, but you don't really know what you'll get if you're approved for the Platinum. Clearly they are trying to get signups for one product vs. the other.
If it helps make your decision, also, in my case I received balance transfer checks for my PCR within the first year, but received nothing promotional for the Platinum. Both have equal ability to be assigned high SL or receive CLI up to same thresholds. Statistically, pre-approvals have 90+% odds of approval if you received such a letter. If that seems like an attractive product, (APR and PenFed being more generous with the BT checks) I'd use the offer I received, personally.
One of the only things that could realistically overturn a pre-approval is a negative change in your credit report since the time that you were screened. Lates, maxed out, ran up inquiries and AAoA into the ground on an app spree, etc. You should be fine.
Hey guys, some questions as well. For the platinum rewards card, the threshold is $50? There's no like $25 gift card or anything lesser? Do they have gift cards like chipotle, ihop, dennys, or gas cards?
And also let's say I'm a trucker and I spend like $5K a month which is $1062.5 in gift card for the month. What's the highest denomination do they have? Thanks!
