As far as Amex SP vs HP for new accounts
A new acct. is likely to ding your credit more than a HP.
But what do I know, I always stay at The max HP inn penalty, so it never really matters to Me
Amex is more likely to give a toy limit as a first card, than say Chase. but that is JMO
And certainly YMMV.
I personally think Chase is the better option, as most voted up thread.
I appreciate all the replies. It turns out she's also preapproved for an FNBO Evergreen. Their offer also included a 17.24% APR, and a SL of $13K. I can see that most people think that Chase is the right move, but from my lurking around these forums it seems like Chase cards are harder to get approved for. I don't know what Chase will think of her only card being a joint account. The Chase Freedom Unlimited is an attractive option though. Discover cards in my mind have a good reputation as being friendly to people new to credit. I don't know much about AMEX and for that reason would prefer to avoid them for her first card.
Ultimately, she's got three good options, which I've ranked here in the order I think she should apply.
1. FNBO Evergreen
2. Chase Freedom Unlimited
3. Discover It
Is anything wrong with my logic? Have I missed the mark with Chase?
I don't see much of a flaw, just be aware that of those Chase is the only one that will HP your credit if you ask for a CLI. No exceptions. If they give you an automatic CLI then all is well but if not then in my opinion it sucks to take a HP just for a CLI request. If you shop a lot at Amazon though their Prime card would be a solid pick.
FNBO you need to call in for a CLI but the process is simple enough and it is a SP in my experience. Just call in every 6 months. Don't go by what it says online...just call. So far FNBO seems pretty solid and their Evergreen was a FOTM card a while back around here for a reason.
Been pretty happy with mine so far and all seems to be going well.
I've never had a DISCO card but if I liked what they offered I wouldn't hesitate, they seem well liked around here and they seem like a solid lender by all accounts.

For my youngest daughter
We got her the Discover as a first card, and later the FNBO
Discover has 2x the rewards first year, makes it an excellent first card.
Both have been good cards.
I agree, waiting a little before a Chase
I am sure some have received a Chase as first card, but many more Discover, FNBO, Amex or Capital One

@James3, I think you are fine with your selection!
We all have our own opinions, but you must do what you think is right.
If it were me, I'd apply for all 3. (might not be the best option for DW)

Haha thank you. We may try for the Chase card and use FNBO as a consolation prize. Either way, I feel good about it. I appreciate the advice.

1. The FNBO Evergreen is a nice card, but FNBO has been acting strange lately, decreasing people's credit limits.
2. Chase is hard to get, but the Freedom cards are their more entry level cards (that and the Slate, which I consider useless).
3. Discover IT is ok if you like being boxed in to restrictive categories.
To my mind the Chase Freedom Unlimited is the card most likely to be actually useful. And in my opinion it's a premium card.
Dang looks like me and @Lou-natic are the only ones recommending Amex. I don't think she's getting a toy limit with her stats, however it's easy to grow. I'd almost get the first 2 or 3, (Amex, Disco, FNBO), then app for Chase in a year. They are MUCH more generous to established profiles imho. I refuse to hit them up for an increase (thus my chopping Chase Amazon Visa recently) 🤣 CHOP CHOP!

@805orbust, Amex easy to Grow? 🤔
You don't think so @M_Smart007 ? They've been pretty easy for me. And all sp's, which is beautiful. If they don't approve (which has only happened once to me), 6 months till the next request and still a sp.
They're pretty much my favorite issuer, for that, plus the customer service is second to none. Imho of course my friend 😉
