Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

My best friend just recieved a Citibank Mastercard with a $2,500 CL less than a month ago. Her first bill isn't due for another 15 days. But she has not actually charged anything on it yet.

Last night, she got a call from Citibank asking her to make a minimum payment. She explained she literally had not used the card yet. She was informed that the call was a "pre-emptive customer contact" call  - asking her to pay her bill before she received it.

Have you ever heard such a thing? It was a brand new card!

Re: Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

Wow hope she didn't give em any info. With all of the Citi customers out there I have a problem believing that they call them all asking for a payment on a card that has not even been used.  Have her contact Citi directly at the number onthe back of her card to make them aware of this.

That does not sound legit at all. They would not have contacted her to make a payment with a $0 balance regardless what is going on with her other credit. Strange indeed. I have "never" heard of this except with fraud activity.

Re: Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

Something sounds fishy to me.....as far as I know, credit cards NEVER call customers and ask them to pay the bill in advance.

I hope she hasn't given them any information yet.....

If she hasn't, she needs to call Citibank to see if the call actually originated from them.  If it didn't, she needs to tell Citibank about the call.

Re: Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

this is a phone version of "update you account information" phishing email.

Let's hope she did not give them SSN#. tell her now to call the citibank and change card # . The sooner, the better. oh and one more thing! tell her to log on to citicards and change her phone number to anything else, doesn't have to hers. just random numbers. Then she'll know that the calls are not legit arfter this change.
good luck.

Re: Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

I'd give you ten to one that call was phishing.

No CC I have EVER had or seen has asked for a "pre-emptive payment." Ever.

Re: Pre-emptive Customer Contact?

I agree that this was a scam.  No credit card would ask for  a "preemptive payment." Especially since she had not charged anything on the account yet.
