Question about Amex and FR

I recently turned 18 and am looking to apply for Blue for Students.

I want to include my parents income on the application as they help me pay the bills but I have a few questions in relation to that and the notorious Financial Review.

If they asked me for tax returns and I didn't file yet(I have not ever filed), what would happen? Also, when they look at your bank statements, let's say my balance on my Blue card is $200 and I have $2500 in my bank account, have they been known to claim, "we don't like your balance, goodbye!" ??

I guess I don't mind that much about the review(as they do give very high limits) I'm just curious as to what they are looking for in the information you give them.

Re: Question about Amex and FR

First off, do you have any credit cards under your name? The reason I ask is because it normally takes 6 months for a FICO credit score to be generated, and since you recently turned 18 you may not have a credit score yet. If that is the case, I would not recommend applying for the Amex Blue for Students card. I attempted to do so right after I turned 18, with no credit history, and I was declined for exactly that reason. If this is the case, I would recommend applying for a Citi or BofA card, treat the card well for 6-12 months, then try for Amex and other prime issuers such as Discover.

If you do have a credit score and/or 6+ months of some sort of credit account reporting on your credit report, you can certainly include your parent's income in the Household income field, although I would only do so if they can be relied on to help you pay your bills. Others may not advocate doing so, and instead only putting your personal income on your application.

As far as the bank balances go, I do not believe Amex uses this as a basis for conducting F/Rs, though someone more knowledgeable may be able to verify. If they asked you for your tax returns, they would most definitely be interested in your returns only, and no one else in your family.

From personal experience, I usually have only around $500 in my checking account while the rest goes into my savings, and the balance on my Amex Clear card is usually at least half that, if not more. Amex only has the information for my checking account, and not my savings account and I do not believe that they have the authorization to request balance information regarding my savings account. I have only had the Amex for a little over a year though, so who knows?

My personal advice would be to treat the card delicately, and have a few backups. In all honesty, I do not believe you should go for Amex as your first card. Not only is it subject to F/Rs (what will you do if the one and only card you have is suspended?) but they are also quite difficult to get in with if you have no prior credit history.

If you do manage to get approved for the card though, treat it well: low balances, don't go out on an app-spree and rack up 10 inquiries in one night, and don't do anything that might make Amex wonder if you're in any sort of financial difficulties.

Good luck.

Re: Question about Amex and FR

Thanks for all of the information. In short no this won't be my only card as I am aware of the craziness they pull with FR.

Are you sure it was JUST because of lack of credit history, did you see this thread: http://fico.lithium.com/fico/board/message?board.id=creditcard&thread.id=96331 (and others)?? looks like several people here have been approved with no history whatsoever...

Re: Question about Amex and FR

As far as that thread goes, I'm not sure, but from personal experience when I applied for the Blue for Students card, the "insufficient credit history" was the only reason they gave for denial.

Re: Question about Amex and FR

Was that an instant denial or were you contacted later and informed that? Also, did you try to call in and do a reconsider?

Re: Question about Amex and FR

it was not an instant denial - it took them about 3 days: I checked the status of my application on their website and it was only then I was notified I had been declined due to a lack of credit history. I also did not bother calling in for a recon because I was not as credit-savvy back then and didn't know that I could.

Re: Question about Amex and FR

Amex denied my girlfriend until she had 4 tradelines. When she was approved she had 2 closed and 2 open CCs. But who knows why. Could have just been age of credit, too many new credit accounts, not sure. Her CR was neg free.

That's very interesting. I actually just called Amex to inquire and he informed me that they take a very good look at your credit picture outside of the bureau's specifically bank accounts or something like like a cell phone account(that's usually not reported).

I guess it is possible those who were approved and reported no credit, might have had checking accounts that Amex was able to verify?

It's very odd.

Re: Question about Amex and FR

I can't see how they could look at celphone bills or bank accounts unless you wrote a bad check and were in chex systems for bouncing checks. Amex does however have their own credit score formula. They might base it on balances from other credit cards. Not sure how they do it. I still can't see how they could see my bank account info. Pretty sure thats kept private. Your address might have something to do with it too. If lots of people in your area are having problems that could affect you as a whole group.

Just as an example but the businesses are off topic. Geico auto insurance wanted $4,000 /yr to insure my auto because they had lots of claims from my zip code. Allstate wanted $1,200 for the same coverage. My driving record was clean but Geico didn't want to insure any more people in my area. This is one possible thing for Amex. But I think the bank account stuff isn't it.

Try to get 2 more CCs then apply for Amex again in 6 months. I recommend that you add 2 of any cards below.
BoA
Citi
Chase
Discover

Out of the list of companies you listed, which credit cards would they approve a borrower with no credit history?
