Currently I'm rebuilding my credit. Back in December 2015 I took an offer in the mail for a Capital One Platinum and was approved for a 750 limit. I took advantage of the 0% intro APR and pretty much maxed it out and paid it off over the 9 months. After 4( or 5 can't quite remember) months I got a credit limit increase of 2000 dollars on it for a total limit of 2,750. Back when I had good credit I used a cashback card as my go-to every-day card and made decent money on it. I don't really have any incentive to use this Cap1 Plat card as there is no reward for it.
I Applied for a Chase unlimited freedom card and was declined. I have 3 collections, the reason listed for declined was derogative activity with the bank. I went to a chase branch and paid it off, called the recon twice, both times they said "nope". whatever.
Now I've got my eyes on Cap1's Quicksilver card. I checked my pre-approved offers and I qualify for Cap1 QuicksilverOne. QS1 has an annual fee and no sign-up bonus. The Quicksilver card has no annual fee, and offers $100 cash back when I spend $500 dollars in my first 3 months.
I want to apply for the Quicksilver card but I'm afraid of being declined again. If I apply for the Cap1 QS card and I am declined can I call the recon line and get the QS1 card instead without an additional credit pull?
Hi estopolis, I started with a Cap1 Platinum and I was able to product change it to the Quicksilver MC with no annual fee, and with the cashback feature. It was really easy to do. I used the online chat feature. I would recommend going that route, that way no chance of using a hardpull and getting declined. Good luck! I hope it works out!
Edited to add that it's kind of a trade off, because if you PC the Platinum to the QS MC you won't get the $100 bonus. The other option is to app for the QS or QS1 and then close the Platinum and move its credit limit over to the new QS.
If you apply to the QS card and are declined then you will have to take another triple pull to app for the QS1 card.
I would second Bella007's advice above. Keep in mind the QS and the QS1 all spend and earn the same, i.e. 1.5%. Besides the difference in annual fee, that is..
Trublu brings up a good point, whereas I forgot about the triple HP that Cap1 does. Reminded of that, I definitely would go the PC route if I were in your shoes. You'll get the cash rewards card you want with nothing added to your credit reports!

You could always try for the DiscoverIt Miles instead. 1.5x miles per dollar (equal to 1.5 cents), doubled to 3x miles per dollar (equal to 3 cents) on all purchases for the first year, no annual fee. I used to have a QS1 but then cut it up and closed the account after I PC'd my ThankYou Preferred to a Citi Double Cash. If you're really big on cash back, you could do better. Not to mention no triple pull from Disc.

+1 This ^^^^ is what I would do as well.
If you get the PC that will allow you to work on bringing your score up while earning rewards... the best of both worlds!
Thanks for all the input. I tried the online chat route with a product change. It was really easy. I really could use that intro APR and intro cashback bonus but I didn't want to risk the hard-pull. Now I have a cashback card which is way better than where I was before.
Citi doublecash sounds pretty nice but I'm not on good terms with Citi.
Thanks again, guys.

Citi is definitely a very conservative lender, and we all have our certain lenders we dislike, so I completely understand.
It's good you got what you wanted though.

Congratulations, estopolis! That is awesome! I'm glad it worked out. I agree about the APR and bonus, but I sure am glad you didn't take the dreaded triple hard pull.
