Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

I am sitting just short of 6 months from my last CLI request which took me to $21,800.  I recently did some balance transfers and currently have 30% utilization on the card.  Can anyone advise me of my chances of getting another CLI?

How are your scores? If you have been making payments greater than minimum, you should have a good chance. I parked a balance on mine for a few months and was close to 55% and was able to get a $1500 cli.

Re: Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

I'm going to take your question a set further.  Besides Discover, does it matter with other cards?

EQ - 698 / TU - 672 / EX - 686

Capital One Savor - $16000 / Capital One Venture - $13000 / Travel Advantage Visa - $11500 / TD Cash Card - $7500 / Bread Rewards AMEX - $6950 / Apple Card - $6500 / TD Double Up - $5500 / Mercury - $5000 / Ally Master Card - $4300 / DCU Visa - $3000 / Capital One QuickSilver - $500

Re: Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

I've gotten CLIs with Discover with that kind of util on the card (BT), but my best CLIs with them were after making a large payment (say $2000) that brought the balance to $0.

Re: Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

I don't think the utilization percentage will impact your ability to receive a CLI so much as the amount that the CLI will be.  For example just to throw numbers out there, if your CLI potential with a 0 balance would be $3k, with 30% utilization maybe they only give half of that and throw you $1500.  The question then is whether or not it's worth holding out another month, dropping that utilization and possibly getting a larger CLI.

With Discover and their willingness to consider a CLI every 31 days, I wouldn't think this is as big of a deal as some other companies such as Capital One that only give CLIs every 6 months for example.

Thank you for the responses.  I believe I will be patient and wait until it is paid down a little.

It is not just about the account itself with any creditor.  Your entire credit profile matters.  Lowering your revolving utilization will help but you need to give us a lot more info regarding your credit profile if you want feedback.

The minimum is not relevant.  All it is is the least you can pay to keep your account current.  It's all about revolving utilization in this specific context.

How did you determine this?  Revolving utilization does have a significant impact but it's not just about revolving utilization.  The OP really hasn't disclosed enough to make an assessment like this.  One would need a much better understanding of the OP's credit profile to even begin to make guess.

Re: Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

Discover seems to be all over the map with CLI's but they do seem to like thinner files and 750 plus FICO's.

For my own CLI's with them, I have not found level of utilization on the Discover card to be a determining factor.

I didn't "determine" anything.  I said I was "throwing numbers out there" [for the sake of the discussion] and that "maybe" the result I suggested could happen.

If someone was looking to request a CLI, would you recommend they show 0% or 5% utilization or 30% utilization at the time?  I think very few people would recommend to go the 30% route.  How much of an impact the utilization difference makes is arguable and I'm sure different for everyone, but you'd be hard pressed to find many that agree that someone showing 30% utilization would be MORE likely to receive a CLI (or greater CLI) than an identical profile simply with significantly lower utilization.

Re: Requesting a Discover CLI with 30% Utilization

If you want to try for an increase just go for it, it's a soft pull unless they warn you beforehand otherwise.  Most users have luck trying every 91 days at this time.  30% utilization is no big deal to them.  The higher your payments are over the minimum payment helps with how much more they will extend you.
