Serious Cap One Question

Hi,

My best friend just called me. He has two Cap One credit cards. One had a balance of $420 and the other had a balance of $1996. He logged in today to make a payment on both only to find out they are not only totally paid off, but overpaid as well.  He did not make any payments. He called his bank and no money was withdrawn. He called Cap One and the rep stated that the money was received to fully pay off the accounts.

Can anyone give me advice as to what he should do and/or what the heck happened here?

Thank you.

Re: Serious Cap One Question

This is nothing but a guess on my part, but I'd say it's most likely.... drum roll please.... a mistake! Smiley Surprised

One day many years ago, my BofA checking account suddenly had a LOT more money in it than it should. I called to let them know. It was a mistake--and they would've uncovered it whether or not I'd alerted them. Someone had transposed numbers (as I recall) for a deposit, and the money ended up in my account. It was swiftly removed and put in the right one.

In all likelihood, this is what's happened with your friend, although I admit it's pretty weird that *two* accounts would be affected.

Bottom line: he knows he didn't make the payments, therefore he shouldn't consider them legitimate. If there are payments due, make them. If there SHOULD be payments due right now, but they're not showing up because of this odd situation, MAKE THEM ANYWAY.

If it's a mistake, it will eventually be discovered. If it's not a mistake....your friend must have a sugar-daddy/mommy they don't know about! Smiley Very Happy

Re: Serious Cap One Question

First, have friend take screenshots of everything.  Then have friend send secure message, keep those responses as well. Message, not call.  Have friend download all pymts and transactions in both accts too.

Then call.

Make sure credit on his accts. weren't that of someone else's accts....mixed up and applied towards his balances.

If he believes Capone flubbed, try to push a pymt on each- for credits if need be....also screenshot status of autopay on both accts too.

Yes, that's what I thought he should do. I just called him and relayed what you wrote. Thank you.

Exactly!    What he doesn't need is C1 eventually figuring out their error, reversing it as of the date of the error, and them reporting OP as late and then denying him future CLI's due to having an unsatisfactory account.    I would also copy everything and sent it certified mail to the CEO's office where you know one of their people will handle it.   They call you the next day if you request a goodwill adjustment.   But by all means yes, CYA.

Re: Serious Cap One Question

I think it would be hilarious to see a a post on here from someone complaining that s/he  had paid their Cap One account  but they didn't see it actually post on their specific account.....

Re: Serious Cap One Question

FYI,

Since there are overpayments now,

Friend will have to push from his bank so that Friends true payment is in.

At some point, the error will be

detected and rectified.

As an aside, CapOne does allow an overpayment of ~10% of the balance if payment is pulled IIRC.

Re: Serious Cap One Question

I'm not sure about the likelihood that two accounts would suffer some sort of mixed up account mistake.  If it was just one account, I would attribute it to a mixed up account number and a wrongly assigned payment.  But having two credit card accounts paid off like that, it's more likely it was something the account owner put through and forgot about or didn't realize.

Could have been a balance transfer or a mailed payment, it could even be the bank being slow to process the payment on their end, or an attempted payment from an incorrect (or overdrawn) account that will soon reverse itself.

Chances are, if the account holder never made those payments and it was some sort of cross up, the issue will soon be dealt with and the accounts will reflect that.
