Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

after the spree gotta reevaluate;

getting YET more new cards is super tempting after 3/4 result lol, but presently am CONSUMED with a BURNING desire to prove PenFed wrong and elicit auto-CLI from them Robot Mad I really thought I would at least get 5k, so it's a setback in terms of expectations. Oh well, hope it grows..so that'll be my short-term goal

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

Thought of making 'what's your next card' thread but just 'tacking' here could be less waste of space lol.

To complete my cashback lineup, US Bank Cash+ should be ideal, for gym, cell phone bill, transit. It also has fast food(so idealy need 2!). If it's too hard to get, Elan. And of course Citi CC.

But yesterday and today browsing, found two promising cards;

Walgreens MC, which gives grocery, spa(does body massage parlour count? I go there from time to time after returning from travels), and gym 3% and it's 'easier' Synchrony, even has prequal, I got $1200, didn't proceed.

And FNBO's BP visa, it's BEAUTIFUL Smiley LOL  Don't have a dedicated gas card so could use this doing car rental(so not often, to be honest)

At The Pump
15¢ off per gallon on fuel purchases at bp and Amoco1

On Everyday Purchases
5% Cash Back on your non-fuel bp and Amoco purchases1
3% Cash Back on grocery purchases1
3% Cash Back on dining purchases1
1% Cash Back on all other qualifying purchases1

Redeem for Cash Back & More
On top of savings on fuel, you'll be rewarded for the everyday purchases that keep you going. Redeem your rewards for a variety of easy redemption options:

Cash Back
Account Statement Credit
Gift cards from major retailers
Travel experiences
And more!

Sadly no BP nearby lol, but can use another grocery card(have Savor One). But mostly bc it's so pretty Smiley LOL  Could I get those this year? We~~~ll, after this spree, eh~~~

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

A lot of my strategy is centered around 0% APR promotional periods as I'm using them to renovate a house. At the moment I have AMEX Buisness Blue Cash with a $500 dollar SUB on $10,000 spend with 0% APR until November 2023.

I am also on 0% APR with a new Discover card until October 2023 and a Citi Rewards+ with 0% APR until Octonber 2023. I really should take full advantage of the zero APR periods and use high utilization on those cards to force some CLIs on them. Then once the promotional period ends I can BT my Discover to another Citi and BT my Citi to another Discover. That keeps the 0% APR train rolling indefinitely.

But my biggest spend item is utilities at $1000 a month so I could use a good  biz utilites card which up to this point I haven't found one. Chase Business Unlimited is ok at 1.5% considering the value of Chase points. Then there is the question of how the utilities are categorized on some of these cards. You might be as well off with a 2% cash back card.

Official travel point totals as of 10/21/24 (1,358,177 Total Points)
Chase Ultimate Rewards 696,884 | IHG One Rewards 144,957 | Hilton Honors 144,521 | AMEX Membership Rewards 102,729 | World of Hyatt 76,095 | Marriott Bonvoy 65,343 | Citi Thank You 38,153 | Choice Rewards 32,460 | United MileagePlus 13,316 | British Airways Avios 12,333 | Jet Blue TrueBlue 11,780 | Wells Fargo Rewards 2,858 | Southwest Rapid Rewards 2,447 | NASA Platinum Rewards 1,883 | AA Advantage 1,744 | Navy Federal Rewards 1,087 | Delta Sky Miles 175 | Virgin Atlantic Virgin Points 100 | Lowes Business Rewards 7,102 ($71.02) | Amazon Rewards 2,200 ($4.75) | Discover CB 10 ($0.10)

My 2023 strategy depends in part with what I do in Q4 2022.

Option 1: Apply for the Citi Premier in a couple weeks while the SUB is at recent ATH (80k). Odds are decent for an approval. This would push my 5/24 date to Q3 2023.

I might use this as a way to transition to Citi, since I could app for a Custom Cash later and reports are you can PC a card to a second CC if you have applied for one.

Option 2: hold tight and dive into Chase with the CSP/CSR in Q2 2023, and/or start picking off keepers (WoH, Southwest Priority card) depending on SUBs.

I'm also looking at transitioning away from AMEX somewhat.

Almost certainly gone by 12/23: Bonvoy Brilliant (this would allow me to explore Chase Marriott cards/SUBs in 2024, probably replace with a Boundless)

Reasonable chance of being gone: AMEX Gold/Green (if I can steer enough spend onto a Custom Cash, SavorOne/Citi Premier/CSR/CSP they become superfluous)

Very likely to stay: AMEX CS Platinum, Bonvoy AMEX Biz (numbers pencil out so far, subject to change)

A mortal lock to stay: Delta Blue (free) Hilton Aspire (this one REALLY pencils out unless they super jack the AF or something)

Update: chose option 1 because Citi Preimer is at ATH for SUB. This pretty much locks me into this card being my only acquisition for Q4 2022/Q1-2 2023. The CSP/CSR or other Chase card decisions will wait until Q3 2023.

I'm probably going to look at dropping my Gold turned Platinum turned Green Smiley Happy in May 2021 without a good retention offer, since I will likely reallocate that spend between the Premier (everything but rental cars/ride share) and my C1 VX/Bilt MC (I will lose 1x. The Schwab Platinum probably stays for now, the Green turned Gold will be a decision in Q3 2023 (a drop would dovetail nicely with a CSR pickup around then).

My conscious uncoupling from some AMEX annual fees starts... Smiley Happy

Charles Schwab AMEX Platinum NPSL | Amex Platinum (I know) NPSL | Amex Gold NPSL | First Tech FCU Choice Rewards World MC 35k | AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant 18k | AMEX Hilton Aspire 17.5k | Chase Southwest Priority Visa 15.5k | Bilt Rewards MC 14k | Capital One Venture X 13k | Fidelity VISA Signature 11.5k | Citi Custom Cash 11.9k | Citi Premier 8.9k | Chase Freedom Unlimited 9k | SoFi MC World Elite 8k | Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red 8k | Capital One SavorOne 7.5k | Amazon/Synchrony 7.5k | Citi Custom Cash 6.9k | PayPal Synchrony MC 6.4k | DiscoverIt Cashback 5k | Hotels.com 5k | Apple Card 3k | Target 800 | Ch 13 filed 12/13 discharged as paid 1/19

My 'strategy' is the most boring of all: nothing. No plans to open any new cards or close existing ones.

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

I like these threads.  It's good to set goals and then assess how well we did at meeting them.

Last year I said:

In January I'll be 1/12 on new accounts and 2/12 on inquiries.  I'll go for the Elan MCP which will likely be easier to get approved than USBank, and hopefully those numbers will be good enough to get it.  I'll dip below 5/24 in April, so I'll finally app for the CSP after pretty much being ineligible for the last few years.  Hopefully the SUB will go up again by then.  I'll also get the Verizon Visa as soon as I can to take advantage of further credits on my phone bill on top of the autopay discount.  And I'm thinking I also might get the SavorOne for a quick $200 and as a complement to the QS for a no hassle cash back combo for foreign travel.

I'm rather proud to say I pretty much followed this to the letter.  This year I got the Elan MCP, Verizon Visa, CSP, and SavorOne.  I also squeezed in the Amex Blue Business Cash and Chase Ink Cash and Unlimited while I was down below 5/24.  I earned a ton of rewards this year, including nearly 300K Chase points.

I also upgraded my Delta Blue to Gold to get 10K SkyMiles, which was stupid.  They charged me a prorated AF on the upgrade and they're about to charge me the full $99 on top of that this month, so I'm basically paying well over $100 for 10K points.  I think they got the better end of that deal.

Oh and I got my biannual Amex Gold retention offer.  20K this time, which puts a nice dent in the AF, so I'm happy with that.

Maybe I'll get to actually use some of the points I've got saved up.  I've been itching to travel again, and I've got enough points for something big.  Hopefully things will be less weird next year.

Nope.  We did a road trip where I used my free IHG night as well as some Hilton and Wyndham points, but that's it.  Ah well.  Maybe next year.

Next year...

I think I'm good on the card portfolio.  I might take advantage of some SUBs, but we'll see.  There's nothing that's calling to me right now.

I did take advantage of some 0% purchases on my new cards.  This enabled me to keep more money in savings longer while interest rates are on the rise.  I'm enjoying that while I can, but I will need to pay all that down before the promo APRs die next year.  My prime money goal for next year is to milk as much savings interest as I can and pay down those balances before they start growing.

I'll go for my 4th biannual Citi Premier SUB in August.  Not sure if I'll close the current one or PC it like I did the others.

Otherwise I'm thinking I'll lay low on the apps and let some history get behind me.

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

Now and through 2023: Further shift towards points

  • Focus more on MR - have gotten more knowledgeable about the points game and seen solid redemptions, so at this point I’d take 2X MR over 3%  - will close 3% cards now (except Propel) + Hilton Surpass/Business eventually, greatly uncomplicating my set-up
  • P2 shifts to miles - P2 has a grandfathered no AF Savor and a VentureOne + I have a VentureOne, so she will begin transferring her Savor cashback into Venture Miles and then transferring the VM to me - I enjoy playing the points game, she does not, but we both enjoy the trips
  • Apply for Amex Business Gold when the SUB timing and planned spending timing is right - hopefully sooner than later but both need to line up (could be before the end of this year, could be 2023)
  • Start banking TYP - highly likely will get a Premier down the line, may as well start banking TYP to transfer later

2023 in general: Get under 5/24 + trim Amex lineup

  • As far as actually applying for cards, outside of Amex business cards I will not open any until ready to apply for a Chase card, which will be December 2023
  • This coincides with us possibly getting a new house next summer (depending on housing market, economy, etc - we’ll look at the big picture), so the gardening serves two purposes - and if we don’t buy, it’ll only be a few more months to be under 5/24
  • Seek retention offers on a few Amex cards as annual fees arrive, trying to balance closing a few but not being too aggressive

2023 Timeline:

  • April: Downgrade BCP back to BCE, then hold BCE until a very good offer to upgrade back arises
  • June: Open a Delta business card (if I’m not in pop-up jail)
  • December: Downgrade Surpass to no AF Hilton - I will eventually apply for Aspire, but we’ll have Diamond until March 2024 based on stays plus my focus will be on Chase, and downgrading this instead of closing allows for the possibility of an upgrade offer to Aspire (which I’d wait until after applying for to take), while also being one less card closed
  • December: Under 5/24 - Chase personal first: will definitely go for CSP or WoH, depending on SUBs at the time, then business: Barclays Wyndham Rewards Earners Business and AA Aviator (edited this section to remove talk about Venture X - the more I think about it, the less it makes sense to add)

2024 is already set to be the year of Chase for me - I know we’re a year out from that thread, but just sayin’...

further update after getting Elan Max Preferred and PCing Citi DC to CC

Really no further need to app for new cards lol, already too much change this month! Will SD or close Tomo, and should just ride heavily on those 4 new cards, plus using Citi CC strategically!

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

For starters, close at least one, but maybe both Credit one cards.

I've got about 8% more in utilization to go before I do that though.

For years I've wanted the CSP. Got started with the CFF this year, but now I'm thinking that doesnt fit me, and the CSR actually makes more sense. I've also really wanted the Amex gold, but that too doesnt seem to justify the AF for me. I think I wanting those cards was ego driven, when I should be letting my new cards age and focus more on practicality.
