Re: Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

As some mentioned suffering from credit boredom so with lack of new cards to work towards I'm basically going another route

My 2023 strategy started late last year with applying for same cards me and wifey applied for before aka SUB chasing again. We're currently on Chase business cards. So far so good and points are piling up. Both of us will probably get their new charge hybrid card (Ink Business Premier) and see if that is something worth keeping long term; the AF is is a turn off but nice to see another business card get 2% on non-category spend and 2.5% on $5k+ purchases

Wife got Citi Premier again and I'll wait til the offer bumps up again before I nab it. AMEX Delta business cards might be on horizon as well. For Chase I might get their Hyatt cards but undecided. US Bank might get their other business card I haven't gotten yet. BofA I don't see getting anything else except maybe their Customized Rewards card but don't have urge to as I am content with PR and Biz Unlimited being only ones. Don't have interest getting into more CUs at this time

Basically, I'm credit bored and apping for same cards again for churning purposes to alleviate boredom. There are worse ways to spend one's time I guess 😂

I could have plagiarized and copied this line and saved myself a lot of typing - that precisely and concisely sums-up my situation as well.

It's not a bad place to be by any means, though... it just means we did a good job the last few years, and now we get to rest.

(For the record, I'm now at 31 cards - not including Curve - which is ridiculous for someone with my limited spend.  I can make an argument for all of 'em, though, LOL)

OK, if someone twisted my arm I guess Truist could be on the chopping block, but I like having options for BT promos.  I used to view my PNC Points card the same way (useless yet harmless), and here I am now using it for a promo, LOL. Smiley Embarassed

As for the rest, yeah... they all have some limited utility (age, grandfathered no AF, etc.).  Not being willing to 'cull the herd' definitely cramps my style when it comes to new acquisitions for bonuses, though.  I'm probably at or near max exposure with Citi and Chase (three cards with each), and who knows about Amex.  Hell, I'm nearing max exposure with Synchrony, LOL.

I guess Comenity is always an option - I have nothing with them. Smiley Surprised

Sames.

Now that 2023 has rolled in, unless some new imaginary $$$ product grabs my attention, not really much for the moment. Perhaps another round of Citi Premier later this Summer or some biz CCs or BLOCs, maybe 😇.

That AAA Visa (two flavors) might be something to consider @UncleB.

If you have any of the former BB&T Bright CCs (pre-Truist conversion), I believe they tend to send out BT promos from time to time from what I've seen.

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

I'm currently gardening for Socks Bank until the Fall. The RedStone FCU card looks interesting, but after missing out on the AOD card I'm hesitant to join any more tiny CUs. My Citi Custom Cash Card is on the chopping block due to the low limit. We may be financing vehicles later in the year. I really don't need anything right now, despite what Amex thinks. 😄

Re: *New* Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

Early this year, I came out of garden and I shopped the Citi SYW card. This is a good card to have while somehow I missed it for several years (I was not a fan of store cards). Since only a few Sears stores left open, the future of the card is uncertain. Anyway, since life is too short, I decided to take the opportunity and get the card Smiley Happy Smiley Happy Smiley Happy

Here are some cards that I may apply in this year: Amex EDP (or ED; waiting for a good SUB), PenFed Pathfinder (or power cash as a second option). The pathfinder AF gets waived for honor advantage members.

Fico8: EX~EQ~TU~840 (12 month goal~850).
BOA (CCR, UCR), Chase (CFF, CSP, Amazon, CIC, CIU), US Bank (Cash+, AR, Go, Ralphs), Discover, Citi (CCC, DC, SYW), Amex (BCP, HH, Biz Gold, BBC, BBP), Affinity CR, Cap1(Walmart), Barclays View.

Re: Setting Your >2023< Card Strategy

In the 2022 thread, I said my two target cards for the year were the U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa in the late spring and the Citi Custom Cash Mastercard near the end of the year.  (I also stated I planned to apply for the PSECU Founder's Visa in December 2021.)  I'll ultimately flipped the order of the USB Cash+ and Citi CC MC; I applied/was approved for the Citi Custom Cash MC in July 2022, after getting the PSECU Founder's Visa in 12/21.  I didn't get the U.S. Bank Cash+ in CY 2022, but that was mainly a function of waiting a bit longer to get that card and ensure I was clearly 1/12 before I applied for it.

As for my 2023 plans, between now and the end of 2023 I definitely plan to apply for a couple cards:

*U.S. Bank Cash+ Visa (5% rewards in two selected categories) - this card and its cousin card, the Elan Financial Services Max Cash Preferred Mastercard or Visa, have been on my radar since about January 2021.  Because I want to get a Max Cash Preferred for a financial institution out of state (bank I used when I was in graduate school in the late 1990s, have a soft spot for them) but am not 100% sure I'll be able to get that card with that bank, I want to try to get the U.S. Bank Cash+ first.  My plan was/is to shoot for the U.S. Bank Cash+ in January, and in fact a short time ago I applied and was approved for the card earlier today. Smiley Happy

*Elan Financial Services Max Cash Preferred (5% rewards in two selected categories) - I don't plan to stop with the U.S. Bank Cash+; instead my intent is to double my 5% fun by getting its similar, "cousin" card, the Elan Max Cash Preferred.  Most likely I will apply for the S&T Bank Visa version of the card.  My current goal is to apply for that card in roughly July 2023.

It's highly unlikely I'll deviate from my plan unless new, no annual fee card(s) are released that I think are too good to pass up, but there is an outside chance I'll target either the Bank of America Customized Cash Visa and/or the American Express Blue Cash Everyday cards in place of the Elan Max Cash Preferred.  Those other two cards are more likely 2024 targets however.

Playing the credit card rewards game since early May 2020.

Current credit cards:
American Express: Hilton Honors
Bank of America: Customized Cash Rewards Visa
Capital One: SavorOne MC
Chase: Amazon Visa, Freedom Unlimited Visa, Freedom Flex MC
Citi: Sears/ThankYou Rewards MC, My Best Buy Visa, Custom Cash MC
Comenity: AAA Travel Advantage Visa
Discover: Cash It
Elan: S&T Bank Max Cash Preferred Visa
FNBO: Amtrak Guest Rewards MC
PSECU: Founder's Visa
U.S. Bank: Cash+ Visa
Wells Fargo: Autograph Visa
Store cards: Kohl's

Next target credit cards: Wells Fargo Bilt Mastercard (probably), Truist Enjoy Travel Visa (maybe)

I can identify with all of the above and the general credit malaise on the forums similar to  @UncleB, @Remedios, @simplynoir, @FinStar.  I've delayed responding to my <2023> thread since I didn't have many clear goals in mind.  After gardening for much of the past two years, I'm just getting back into new applications.  When I started adding new cards in 2018 and came to My FICO shortly thereafter, my goals were to add some great travel cards, increase my overall rewards, update my cards to more current options, and increase my individual/aggregate limits.  I've accomplished much of what I wanted to do.  Like @Remedios, I have 20 cards which is more than I really need and I've considered closing some eventually.  It's been fun adding more cards and higher limits, but I've also seriously considered off-and-on about the timing of a downsizing on my less-useful cards.   While I'll probably continue to build diversity and credit lines a little longer, I find myself sometimes considering simplification.

All I know for certain is now that I completed my Citi AAdvantage Executive SUB (approved Oct 22), my next goal is a Chase INK Unlimited card to pair with my Chase INK Cash.  The SUB is awesome at $900 for $6K spend.  Smiley Very Happy

Beyond that, my thoughts are conflicted.  From 2020-2022, I had planned a new Wells Fargo card but nothing really appeals to me at the moment that adds long-term rewards value.  I believe they will introduce at least one new card this year, however.
