Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

Plans for 2021:

Q1: finish off 5k spend for AMEX Bonvoy Brilliant. Dump a Synchrony Cathay Pacific card.

Q2-Q3: garden because I need some of these LOL/24 card slots to drop off for Chase 5/24. Try to build trade lines (right now doing 5k of spend on a card with a 3100 limit over 90 days is... possible, but I'd like it less challenging). Renew AMEX Green, Gold, Hilton Aspire (paying AF) unless there's a super sweet upgrade offer for Green/Gold.

Q4: Decide if my child going to  a more 'spensive state college instead of current cheaper community college (which is what happened the last few years) is worth getting a good SUB somewhere/blowing a 5/24 slot. But it will only be ONE card.

To be honest, my current setup of what would be daily drivers + regular use (Green for travel, Gold for groceries/dining, Discover/Amazon for 5% on various categories, a choice of 2% CB cards for catch all) is pretty good. There is an argument to be made for maybe dropping AMEX Green for the CSR someday.

Q1/2 2022: get out of LOL/24 jail

Charles Schwab AMEX Platinum NPSL | Amex Platinum (I know) NPSL | Amex Gold NPSL | First Tech FCU Choice Rewards World MC 35k | AMEX Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant 18k | AMEX Hilton Aspire 17.5k | Chase Southwest Priority Visa 15.5k | Bilt Rewards MC 14k | Capital One Venture X 13k | Fidelity VISA Signature 11.5k | Citi Custom Cash 11.9k | Citi Premier 8.9k | Chase Freedom Unlimited 9k | SoFi MC World Elite 8k | Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red 8k | Capital One SavorOne 7.5k | Amazon/Synchrony 7.5k | Citi Custom Cash 6.9k | PayPal Synchrony MC 6.4k | DiscoverIt Cashback 5k | Hotels.com 5k | Apple Card 3k | Target 800 | Ch 13 filed 12/13 discharged as paid 1/19

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

AOD. That's it. This year I've been approved for the Amex Platinum, BBP, Amazon Bus Prime, Apple Card, Best Buy Visa and second Discover. Complete the 5k spend for 100k with the platinum. I will garden for the year.  But what I want most is to learn how to display my cards on this site!

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

This coming year will mark the time when my reports become clean again.  With the DW as a gauge, I should be in the high 700's to low 800's after all derogs go away.  I will be at a point then with no new personal accounts for a year and will be at 4/24 with very few INQ's aside from a string of NFCU denials on TU.   I won't be looking for a huge amount of cards but want to focus on ending up with high limit cards.  I have been paying in full since my rebuild began and don't see that changing.  Lenders should like my DTI and Income also.

Personal Goal Cards:

If AOD 3% card is still there...

Penfed, FNBO or PSECU 2% card

Third NFCU Card and CLI's with the end goal of turning my FS into a large limit card.

Business:

Maybe go for an Ink card first even with my dislike for big national banks.

FNBO 2% Visa (An excellent Biz Card)

AMEX Business Card

On the chopping block:  Apple Secured Card, Ollo and perhaps Good Sam store card unless they upgrade it.  Also, If Discover keeps sending me denial letter, they will be kicked to the curb as well.

Until reports are clean, I will continue to try for SP Cli's and hit up Amex for a revolving Biz card monthly until they finally submit.  Man it has been a long 7 years.

Ask one of the mods, they might get it started for you.

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

I think I have an idea of what I want for 2021. I am trying to dump the 1.5% CB cards that I carry to move into a more specific spend percentage. Travel isn't that important as I don't see traveling through 2021 unless something drastically changes as it relates to COVID-19.

Once my current mortgage is paid and I am paid out my equity, I will be paying off one of my CR Navy Fed card and PC it to either the AMEX or Platinum (most likely the AMEX) and then focus on paying off my GR Navy Fed and PC that to a Platinum.

Look at growing the CapOne QS card (which I don't really need but it's old)

Growing Disco (probably will never happen lol)

Growing PenFed (will be the daily driver after PCing CR Navy Fed)

Growing AmEx (secondary driver)

Looking for a new house to buy (Fall 2021)

Would look at AOD for the 3% CB after closing on a new house

Looking at the Elan Max Cash card again (5% of CB categories are helpful compared to 2% from PenFed) later in the year

Re: Setting your 2021 Card Strategy

I just picked up AOD 3% which was my prime target. If Elan allows PC's to the Max Rewards in the future, I'll turn my 1.5% Real Rewards card into that. If not, I might do an app in late 2021.

Honestly, AOD makes so many cards irrelevant it's funny. I opened up a "high yield" savings account at PNC back in March to age and ultimately gain access to their cards from California, but hey... I've made a whopping $4 in interest from the $688 in credit card rewards I transferred into there! crazy.gif I'm thinking of moving that over to AOD savings (along with $412 I somehow didn't notice I have on BCP) to show a little appreciation and further build a relationship there, aiming to eventually get my $10K line to $25K.

I'll probably take some HP's for CLI's at BBVA and Chase, and see what they have to offer.  I'll keep Chase around as UR will play well with my future vacation plans and Amex Simply Cash+ as well for a constant 5% off my cell bill.  BOTW will hit a year next March, so I'll see what a SP gets me over there as well (I've put a TON of spend through that card and PIF every month, so they should offer up something!)

After that, I might start trimming some low hanging CL's (under $10K) to prepare for better offers should they come my way.
