Should I upgrade from CSP to CSR?

I was approved for CSP in May of 2019 with a SL of $5,000. Other accounts are Disco with $14.5k CL, Citi Costco with CL of $9500, and two Capital One cards with combined $1,100 CL.

Current FICO 8 scores are 797 EQ, 776 TU and 753 EX. Utilization at 22 percent across all revolving accounts. No late payments or blemishes. Last CSP statement showed $35 balance. Income $200k-plus.

File is somewhat thin; first revolver was opened in June of 2018. Will be two years with the higher limit DiscoverIT in November.

I've coveted the CSR because of the travel credit, additional points awarded, lounge access, etc. I don't travel often for work but I do for fun (pre-pandemic) and would use the $300 travel credit for sure. I know I wouldn't be eligible for the signup bonus.

I put a lot of spend on the CSP and in a year went from 0 to 130k Ulitmate Rewards points.

Should I call Chase and go for it? Do I have decent chances to get the $10k credit line needed? Is this even worth it? I'm sure this would require a hard pull.

Longtime lurker here and respect the wisdom of this group ... first post in a long time Smiley Happy

Re: Should I upgrade from CSP to CSR?

Welcome back.  It will require a HP (maybe two, but that is more common with a new app) but it seems like you have a good shot. Your credit file wasn't even a year old when you got CSP.  I would personally go for it, and if you were denied I would talk to UW and specifically tell them the reason you want the CLI.  With the spend you put through, I would be surprised if you were declined and even needed to talk to UW.

If approved for the CLI, the product change is quick and easily done with a phone call.  In most cases, the CSR will usually make more sense than a CSP unless someone literally does zero travel.  Best of luck!

Is there a best time to call Chase?

I'm getting in the weeds here. LOL

Best time is after your card's a year old.  So, last month?   😂

The CLI request is automated, they just have to press a few buttons on their end, so any time is fine for that or a product change.

Bad news. Just tried and they declined my CLI with no reason given.

Ouch.  From your stats that comes as a surprise.  When you get the letter, the only thing you have to lose with a recon call is another "no."  (They usually will not ask to pull again.)

How long does it take for them to send a letter?

Re: Should I upgrade from CSP to CSR?

Sorry to hear about the denial for CLI.

From your stats you have $6,800 of card debt? Is that on a 0% promo? I'll guess that level of balances on the $30k+ of limits ( and only $30k total limits for under 2 years ) may be the combo.

The CSR does get a nice additional point for dining, and for travel, but the amount of travel is probably light. Adding a CSR right now doesn't get much extra. Discover's 5% Q3 is dining, so that takes away a lot of the CSR appeal coming up.

Have you thought of getting a CFU? That gets you .5 UR extra on non-category spend which can add up.

High Bal Jan 2009 $116k on $146k limits 80% Util.
Oct 2014 $46k on $127k 36% util EQ 722 TU 727 EX 727
April 2018 $18k on $344k 5% util EQ 806 TU 810 EX 812

Re: Should I upgrade from CSP to CSR?

So the letter showed up on my Chase app overnight. It listed one reason for the denial:

"Too many installment loans other than mortgage, automobile or student loans."

The only personal loan I have is from a credit union. It's two years old and the balance is $5,000. Unfortunately, my company's credit union was taken over by another credit union in July of 2019 and every one of the accounts was closed and reopened under the new credit union's name, lowering my AAOA. I also have a car loan with them.

Should I even bother with recon?
