UPDATE:
Finally received the letter disclosing why it was closed (along with the amazon card that was cancelled before it was mailed) and my suspicions was right. The fraud department checked both accounts against eachother and i guess was weirded out about the name change... either walmart credit card services did not communicate the name change with synchrony bank or synchrony's fraud department is really terrible at their job... figured i'd let you guys know the conclusion in case someone has the odd situation i had . Happy holidays guys.
The explanation doesn’t really make sense.... can you post a pics of the letter redacting your personal info? I’m curious to see how it was worded. In my head it’s something along the lines of, “ Hello Mister, we had to close your account because you had a recent name change and couldn’t confirm it.” That will just be flat out ridiculous if that’s the case.

i dont even think they knew i had a name change... at least i feel like that's the only way they would have been freaked out as my new ss card and id and the name change decree was all sent to walmart card services... so unless they have no knowledge of the name change it wouldnt really make sense... it honestly doesnt make sense to me either way as u would think they'd reach out to walmart card services to see how exactly that name change took place... anyway, i'll make a copy of the letter when i get home so you guys can see what it says but this is how it reads:
Dear CHRISTIANNO,
We have recently completed an identity review using information on your existing AMAZON.COM CONSUMER account.
To complete this review, we checked credit bureau information and other data sources to verify your information. These databases may include, but are not limited to, public records. We checked the following items: Social Security Number, Address (these are the same on both accounts and the credit bureau from which they pulled by the way.)
Based on this review, we are unable to verify your identity matches the information on your account. As a result, the charging priveledge have been withdrawn and your account closed. If there is a balance on the account, you are responsible for making payments per the terms and conditions of the credit agreement.
I received 1 of these letters for each account. Both mailed to same address, with same name. Shows at the bottom of the letter that they used information from transunion. My transunion also reports the correct name, ssn and address as reported on these accounts so no idea what they mean by "cant verify"... i can only assume they mean the old name but the information given is very vague about what they could not verify.
Update:
Though at this point i'm honestly over it because of the abrupt way they handled this, i responded to the letter sending all my documents including the name change decree, copy of new ID, copy of new ssn, copy of the transunion credit report they claimed to use to "verify my identity" and their original disclosure to me (all which i highlighted the important stuff for them). I honestly dont think they actually took the time to investigate... like there's just no way they did. If they reinstate those accounts then that'd be cool... if they dont than I'm likely better off without them.
Update: In case anyone else ends up in a similar predicament in the future... Synchrony did end up reinstating both accounts today so there is actually hope getting these things turned around.

Wow, the stars aligned for you! Congrats!

It seems they could've just called and requested for those documents be sent to them for verification rather than going around the hard way. But, I'm glad to hear they actually did review the documents you sent even though they never asked for them. I have 5 accounts with Sync myself and they have been good to me. So far anyway. I received the dreaded Blue Envelope and requested the 4506-T for income verification. American Express also suspended my accounts for Financial Review and asked for the 4506-T. Thankfully, I survived both ordeal. But the wait was very stressful and emotionally draining especially when you are doing your best during a rebuild.
Out of topic curiosity, though. I didn't know you can take up someone else's name who's not related to you.
And CONGRATULATIONS on a successful fight to reinstate your accounts. Maybe they can do a 10x CLI on your accounts for subjecting you through that?

Wow, that does stink. Sorry to hear this. It does appear random with stats provided. Only thing i can think of is some type of fraud concern. Any issues with id theft?
This bank and Barclays should get together as they both have their head somewhere that is dark! Both seem to follow the same path and not getting it together comes to mind. Closed the Synchrony Bank Cards a couple of years ago and one left with Barclay that will be booted out the door in the next few months. Now worth the grief!

I have a 3500 Wally (opened with 500 just 3 months ago)
A 600 Amazon (opened same week as Wally)
A BP 2000 (opened 2 1/2 months ago and SL of 200)
My scores are well lower than yours.
Something has them spooked mate.
OP failed to mention a name change until just recently.

Whoa... calm down there mate... name change wasnt mentioned in first post because even i didnt realize walmart card services doesnt (when they should) communicate these things to synchrony bank. To me the closing of both cards were random since i had already sent them all papers months ago (not to mention closing cards in this situation seems overkill when just asking for those papers would have been easier, convienient and less time consuming... the name on the account didnt just change by itself; obviously paper work had to be sent to confirm this)... It wasnt until this guys post that i even thought of that being a possibility.

Those were my thoughts exactly. It just seemed a bit clumsy to just close both my accounts instead of suspending them and asking for the proper documents. I mean, walmart card services obviously had those documents to change the name in the first place so i just didnt understand why they didnt reach out for verification. And yep, technically when doing a full name change you change your name to anything under the sun (assuming the judge signs off on it)... i just chose the same last name as my fiances (now wife) grandad because it felt right . Thanks for the grats!! It would totally be great if they'd increase my limits for the trouble they put me through, haha.
