Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

I have read within this communty, as well as others that people have claimed to have their Target RedCard debit card graduate to the Target RedCard credit card.

I was recently approved for the Target RedCard Debit and was denied for the Target RedCard Credit, because they stated they need to verify my identity, yet I applied in-store after purchasing a $400 TV and handed the cashier my driver's license and veteran's ID, so that's strange that I was approved for the Target RedCard Debit and not the Credit.

Anyway, I spoke to a Target credit analyst who stated, "Target RedCard debit cards "do not" graduate to target RedCard credit cards. As a matter of fact we don't even consider the fact that a client has the Target RedCard debit card into consideration for the Target redCard credit card.

Once I find those post I'll report them to a moderator for removal.

You sure that you aren't speaking about Target REDcard credit cards graduating to the MasterCard version? I have never seen anyone claim the debit becomes a credit card, just that the debit has the same benefits as the credit card. It's the credit card that can graduate from a store card to a MasterCard.

I’ve never heard of a Target Debit graduating to a credit card either. They are two different products. It’s not like a secured card graduating by any means.

Lots of instances of target store card graduating to the MasterCard version though.

The Target debit cards are completely different than the Target Red Store cards. The debit cards never graduate to credit cards. That actually doesn't even make sense. The debit cards are actually handled by a different line of  business unit within TD Bank. I know this because I had to report fraud on my debit , when someone tried to use it that was in another state. Now I do believe TD Bank lets the same customer service department handle both credit card and debit card calls. It could an OP had a customer service agent make a mistake, because customer service agents are human too.

Now I do know that the Target Red cards to graduate to the Mastercard version, because mine did.

I hope that clears up any issue.

Agreed with the above - I've never seen anyone talk about a non-credit product "graduating" to a credit product.

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

As everyone has said, don't think anyone has said that the debit card graduates.   In some cases it wouldn't be welcome anyway, as it would be a new account on the credit report.

Also, there is no need to "report" posts with wrong info to the moderators for deletion, a lot of posts would have to go!  In this forum, wrong info is often countered by later posts by others, just like in this thread!

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

Well, the general consesus seems to be that 100% of you beleieved I misunderstood, and when people spoke about graduating, they meant from standard Target store card to the Target Mastercard.  Initially, I thought the same thing, but after reading several posts, I wanted to look into it a bit more.

So, when Target was willing to price match my $400 TV down from $499 from an online competitor, that's when I asked the cashier, if I applied for their card, could I get the additional 5% off an already price-matched price? Some would say I was being greedy, but a penny aved is a penny earned. Anyway, she stated, "I could."

That's when she applied for the Target RedCard Credit which came back with "We'll contact you in 10 days(a letter I obtain a couple of days ago, stating the reason for being declined is becausethey couldn't verifify my identiy"

So, that's when I spoke to a Target credit analyst, who validated everything I stated and that she has had to explain that to to several people .

As you can tell from my essay-length posts, I'm a very thotough and analytical person and I know I read those posts and will find them, because if those MyFico community posts can confuse the likes of me, i'm positive others have been confused also.

I can also post links from other website's message boads where posters have stated something similar, and I tried to do that when I create my original post, but I got the dreaded, "Your HTML is invalid message," and I didn't want to violate MyFico community forum guidlines.

Again, I will find those MyFico posts, that I'm thinking were either in the Rebuilding forum or the Credit Card forum, either way, I'm going to find thing for to reasons:

1. Clarification and Accurancy

2. So you all don't think I'm just babbing.

I greatly appreciate each all of your feedback and I  Kudoed(if that's a word) everyone who responded.

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

This is me being very analytical again.

You are right the Target "credit-products" are managed(funded) by TD Bank, but I don't believe the Target debit-products are, as explained by a Target credit analyst, who I'm positive stated that the Target RedCard debit is managed in-house by Target.

Also, you stated that you had to file a fraud claim when someone attempted to use your Target RedCard debit in another state.

Did you mean your Target RedCard credit-product?

I ask because you are required to your PIN for each and every purchase using your Target Redcard debit and unless you wrote your PIN on your Target RedCard debit, would it be impossible for them to actually use it?

Not trying to be a pain in the behind, but you now you see that I do READ posts that matter to me, just like I did the posts that forced me to create this topic.

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

If it’s all out there happening to people, I’m interested in the details out of curiosity (I have the debit and credit already). However it still seems very unlikely for two reasons:

1) a debit card doesn’t require a credit pull, but the credit card most definitely does, so moving someone to a credit product from a debit card is very unlikely, and at least, highly unusual

2) more telling, if your source is correct, the store manages debit and TD Bank manages credit, and those are two wholly separate entities, which makes a “hey, this guy has a debit card - how about you underwrite a credit card for him on your own dime” kind of handoff pretty tough to believe. Banks don’t generally operate like that, underwriting with their own money on someone else’s good-faith day so.

Also, keep in mind (or find in your reading) just how inaccurate many CSRs have been over the phone with people. Many of them do not know how their products operate, they just take the calls, punch in numbers, and reply with the computer’s decision.
