Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

The debit card is definitely managed by Target.

"RedCard™: Target Debit Card, Target Credit Card, and Target™ Mastercard®. Subject to application approval (Target Mastercard not available to new applicants). The RedCard credit cards (Target Credit Card and Target Mastercard) are issued by TD Bank USA, N.A. The RedCard debit card is issued by Target Corporation. Pat 7,562,048 and 8,117,118."

If it’s all out there happening to people, I’m interested in the details out of curiosity (I have the debit and credit already). However it still seems very unlikely for two reasons:

1) a debit card doesn’t require a credit pull, but the credit card most definitely does, so moving someone to a credit product from a debit card is very unlikely, and at least, highly unusual

2) more telling, if your source is correct, the store manages debit and TD Bank manages credit, and those are two wholly separate entities, which makes a “hey, this guy has a debit card - how about you underwrite a credit card for him on your own dime” kind of handoff pretty tough to believe. Banks don’t generally operate like that, underwriting with their own money on someone else’s good-faith day so.

Also, keep in mind (or find in your reading) just how inaccurate many CSRs have been over the phone with people. Many of them do not know how their products operate, they just take the calls, punch in numbers, and reply with the computer’s decision.

I don't think OPs claim is that it is actually happening (and as we have all said, it is extremely unlikely that it could), more that posts out there, both here and on other forums, say that it can.

While I don't recall any such posts, I shouldn't have been so definitive, people post all sorts of wrong stuff, so it's certainly possible that someone (or several people) have.  Now I still stay that hunting them down and requesting deletion is misguided, and I would suggest OP considers how something like "I'm a very thotough and analytical person and I know I read those posts and will find them, because if those MyFico community posts can confuse the likes of me, i'm positive others have been confused also."  comes across (especially helped with the typo!)

I agree, and my post was meant to state that if it is happening, by all means I’m sure many of us would love to see it. It just doesn’t sound like the way any bank I’ve ever known operates.

When excited, I type too fast and yes, there will be typos, with that said, most get the gist of what I'm asking or stating.

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

Caneaus2020,

Let me clarify this for you. I had a fraudulent charge on my Target debit card about five years ago. A purchase was made with my Target debit card in CA. I caught it when I was looking at my checking account online. When I called Guest Services, they were going to mail the paperwork to me to the address where I get mail, which is 2 hours away(I stay at my beach house part of the week and my inland house for the other part of the week). The fraud department faxed the paperwork over to me after they closed the debit card.  On the cover letter, it was signed with the assocciate's name and under it was TD Bank on behalf of Target Corporation Financial and Retail Services.

I faxed back a statement that I live on the East Coast and actually made a purchase with my Target Red credit card the same day at my local Target. I included a notarized bank statement showing the fraudulent debit charge, screen shot of the debit purchase from Target's website, and  a copy of the receipt showing I was on the East Coast at the time of purchase. About a week or so later, Target credited my checking account for the amount of the debit.

With regards to how a thief could make a purchase within Target, I have no idea. If a thief wants to steal something, they will always find a way to make it happen.

Finally, I have learned a lot from the threads on myfico.com over the years. Without this forum, I would not have rebuilt credit to be back where I was credit was prior to my bankruptcy. With this forum, I was able to join Navy Federal the right way, learn how to save money on my home insurance, and how to better manage my credit profile while making less money. Also I take everything I read on here at face value. If there is something really erroneous on a thread, I have trust in the moderators to stop and lock the thread. After 8 years, I really can't think of an instance where there was a thread with really inaccurate information. I'm sure it may have happened, I just don't remember any examples.

I hope this clarifies everything for you.

The typo wasn't the point (just added irony), more the tone of "because if those MyFico community posts can confuse the likes of me, i'm positive others have been confused also".   Now it's possible that you meant something like "since I assume my comprehension and knowledge is similar to that of most users here, when I get confused it's likely that many others will too." but given the context of stressing your thoroughness and analytical skills, it sounds more like "if even I get confused, I'm sure the little people of myfico won't stand a chance."

If that is not your intention, be more careful in wording!

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

if you go to the website for target they only show 2 cards: debit and credit. so if someone hears about one card graduating into another they might falsely assume it means debit into credit, since they aren't aware there's actually 3 cards. that could be how the misinformation is spreading.

to make it even more confusing how many cards does best buy have... 4? 8? yet they only show 2, and when you app you can't pick which one you'll end up getting either.

Re: Target Debit RedCard Target Credit RedCard Graduation Misinformation.

oh my...ok, lets recap and keep it simple and easy to understand for everyone.

1. Target debit card does NOT convert or graduate in any way to a CC..two completely different programs. One is credit, the other is funding set up thru your checking account.

2. If you have the Target store CC (and not the debit card), you can't "ask' for the upgrade. Its something that is automatically done by TDB if they deem your account eligible.

3. No-one knows when your account becomes eligible for the upgrade except for TDB, and they will notify you by letter.
