I hate to be a downer but unless TD drastically changes lending policies this card is known for staying at the initial $200-500 limit forever.  They do not accept customer-initiated CLIs and very rarely give automatic CLIs.  I have one and I like the 5% discount but I really have no expectation of it growing past its current limit.

The Visa hasn't been open to new applications since 2009-2010ish.

Ok thanks, this answers all my questions, i was wondering why i had such a small CL, but now i guess i will just the card for my small supplies needed. That way it stays being used.

I got mine 11/2012 with a $200 CL. I've gotten 3 auto CLI since they changed to TD Bank. I'm at $800 now. I only use a small amount and PIF every month. Hmmm.

That's encouraging to hear.  I've seen a handful of other recent posts saying they got inceases as well.

Well if you look at it from their point of view there are few pro's to only giving smaller limits:

  • 5% off on purchases between $0-500 is mostly going to cover household items and groceries that already have a good markup.  If you can encourage repeat customers at a bit of a discount it means more profit for them.
  • it limits their potential losses
  • margins are smaller on higher priced electronics and other items in order to stay competitive, so lower CL limits them from unneccesarily cutting prices further

Opened mine 11/2012 with a 200 limit.

Used it for the first time 07/2013, spent 90.00

paid 30.00 on the first bill

got a CLI to 700.00 in shortly thereafter....

wish everyone else would triple my limits right now Smiley Happy

Re: Target Red Card

I really think that their practices are changing since changing banks. I just opened my card a month ago approved for a 500 limit. I go to Target often, and plan on PIF. My sister was also just approved for 3k so I think that stating this card is doomed at 200 limits and will never grow is unfortunately what we hear, but not necessarily be true for all. I'm hoping that the new bank taking over will change things.

Re: Target Red Card

Target is my go-to store so I had gotten the redcard and had been ok with the 200 limit since I didn't want to spend more than that a month on groceries and stuff.  I would have about 150 charged per month and pay it off every month (really the only thing to do with a 200 limit card).  Got the card in Decemeber of 2012 and noticed in July that my limit had been increased to 900.  Guess that was about the time banks changed.  Anyways, just wanted to chime in and say that the cards to increase limits and it may have been due to the rather heavy use.

Re: Target Red Card

I have had my card since 2004. To be fair, they did CLI to 500 soon after I got it. I did run into some lates while I was in school but did get the account back in good standing. They CLD me back to 200 wayyyy back when and no increase since. They are my oldest card. I do use them almost in full each month and usually PIF.

I did check my Target softs. It appears they are only softing Experian about every 8-9 months best I can tell. I was just softed in June and no increase.

I have since been on an App spree and now have over 30k in limits so maybe next time around they'll decide I'm worthy! haha

Re: Target Red Card

i went on a lil app spree when my credit score went up significantly back in march of this yr and was approved for target red card instantly for $200 in-store at customer service .. the temp card said it was an "initial limit" so i assumed it would be more than that when i got my card in the mail but i was WRONG! lol however i do use the card every wk and always pay several times a month just to use the 5% discount and apparently it was a good thing bc today to my suprise when i checked my account, as i always do before i go shopping,  my limit was increased automatically to $400 ! I was in shock! at first i thought i made a mistake and accidently paid too much when i did my last online pmt.. lol then realized that my new statement was just cut and there was a new limit. Smiley Happy So obviously now that they r backed by TD they r doing things a lot differently .. was hoping that i wld get upgraded to a visa but apparently they got rid of it? Smiley Sad  just thought id let those of u who just got this card know that they do def review ur acct for auto clis looks like its every 8mo or so..

The Target Visa is no longered offered or available to PC but some of us on these forums still have it.  Now, whether TD Bank decides to reintroduce it is anyone's guess - mostly speculation or rumors.  On the upside, it appears your card was elegible for an auto-CLI whereas in most cases folks on these forums (or elsewhere) have been stuck with low CLs (~$200 or so) for ages.
