Look, you are not the only one.  My husband has a Macy's card (his oldest account, from like 1986) and of course all he hears about is the Macy's AMEX.  Macy's seems to love him so of course he finally decided to ask them to upgrade him to their AMEX.  He didn't even think it was a "real" AMEX.  Why would they  not approve him, anyway?  With perfect credit history since his BK in 2004, and scores that are 700-ish.

Shockingly, Macy's told him that he was not approved, and they told him that AMEX found his score to be too low.  Wow... harsh.  I don't have many warm, fuzzy feelings for AMEX.  I never have, but now I really don't.

I believe AMEX has nothing to do with the off brand card.

The payment goes throught the AMEX network but the actual approval has to come from the company issuing the card; same applies to BOA AMEX, USAA AMEX etc. If you get denied, it has nothing to do with AMEX but everything to do with the issuing creditor.

At least thats my understanding.

Re: The Decision

That was my understanding, too.  That's what they told him on the phone, though.  The CSR might have been misinformed.

+1

It might be that Macy's didn't explain itself very well, and that what they were trying to say is that he didn't meet the (Macy's) requirements for their AmEx.

Still frustrated and embarrassed.

Tried a recon, they don't do recon's unless one the reasons they include in the denial is inaccurate.

It's unfortunate that they won't recon. Your experience is exactly why I'm waiting to app with them. My last app in June 2010 was denied. Just give it 6 months and app in the summer -- that's when I'm hoping to be able to app with them again, too. Smiley Happy
