Time to close Cap One?

I've had this card for 3 years, started I guess as a rebuilder Platinum card. I was upgraded to QuickSilver 1 with  a $39 AF.

I tried to have the AF removed when I first PC'd (sometime shortly after QS came out?) my AF is due again this month and I just tried again via chat and they could not do it. I just don't think the fee is worth it. I have a combined 95k in credit lines now. This is my lowest card at 2250 (aside from Target.)

I just sent a facebook message. I think if they don't agree to permanently remove the fee I will cancel. I would have to spend 7800 a year  on it to make it better than a no AF 1% card. I don't think that's going to happen since I have so many great reward cards (CSP, Discover, Sallie Mae, BCE, etc) Plus I keep getting preapproved offers for Double Cash, so what good is a 1.5% card if I can get a 2% card?

Should I ask for anything else? I sort of feel like go big or go home!

Re: Time to close Cap One?

17.9%...which I think is somewhat decent for Cap One lol.

It's kind of weird that they just sent me a BT offer 0% 12 months, 3% fee so obviously they want my business to some degree??

Well, there is some benefit then. Although if you draw $2k then your utilization goes through the roof Smiley Happy

I was going to say, if the interest was somewhere below 12% that might offset some of the AF, but, no, not so much anymore.

If you can get BT offers and use $1k per year for BT, maybe it is worth it to hang around and see what develops later, consider the $39 part of the annual interest, which would become something like 7% APR, adding in the 3% fee. Not too shabby.

Re: Time to close Cap One?

You had me scared for a sec that Quicksilver had a AF, then I saw there are 2 different quicksilvers.  I literally just got off the line with Capital One to request a new card.  I literally have not used my card in about 4 years, and my card was expired.  I'm focusing on my low limit cards and going to hit them hard with spending to try to get CLI increase across everything.  My card literally was my first one and has a 1k limit back from 2007.  The said I can upgrade to a Quicksilver for free, I had some crappy platinum card so I told them go for it, if it has no AF and no inquiry on credit.  How long ago did you open the card?  Have you caluclated if its going to hurt your credit based on the AAoA and line decrease?  I have 3 cards which have AF sadly, but they have such high lines I don't think I want to close them, 2 southwest cards.  I have a AMEX gold that doesn't necessarily have a credit line but I don't want my AAoA to be hit due to it.

Re: Time to close Cap One?

I have a pretty thick file. My Target is 10 yrs old. Most of my other cards are 1-3 years old. I have many old loans. Then I have a backdated Amex to 1998. So I can possibly add another Amex if I need to.

I originally got this card 3 years ago and it was "upgraded" from a no hassles card to a quicksilver rewards but they kept the AF with it.

I think I've just outgrown them. But I'll give them a chance to keep my biz.

Re: Time to close Cap One?

Did you specifically ask to be upgraded to the regular Quicksilver? If you only asked for the AF removal, they may not have even looked to see it if was available.
The regular Quicksilver has no AF and I believe no BT fees. (For me at least)

Close it if they won't waive the fee.

Re: Time to close Cap One?

Yes I specifically asked to go from qs1 to qs. Facebook folks said no can do. Grrrr. Debating if I even want to fill with exec office at this point.

I'd much rather put the fee towards keeping my csp. Guess it's time to app for double cash. Holding out to see if they send me the bonus offer.. I've been getting mailings for it but no bonus. I have a typ so I may just pc it.
