Happened to me when I was paying for $1200 of a Louis Vuitton purse with my Platinum card over the holidays. The clerk called it in and put me on the line while they asked me some Innovis type questions then approved the charge. The card was 6 months old then but just had a substantial cli.

@black_citi wrote:So I go to the store to make some purchases with my newly 1 week old aquired Venture card. Swipped, then declined. I only had the card for a week and this is my very first time using it. I have 2 other cap one cards with them and I never had that issue, but I knew it was because the account was so new and plus I was trying to put quite a bit on there. That spooked them so the card was declined. I used my QS Visa instead.
I came home and checked my account and sure enough it said that my Venture account has been restricted and that I must call the 800 number they provided. I called and a very nice woman answered. She said they need to verify some security measures (they actually had to call me back to make sure the number I called them from was legit), and afterwards they reinstated my account. All good now. But I missed out on my mile points. I had planned on using the card today to get those miles but oh well now.
Although it was a bit of an inconvience, I actually love this fraud protection. I am just curious as to how they determine when to decline a charge. Even though my account was new (which is what the rep told me as to why the account was restricted), I have made large purchases in the past (not often) with brand new accounts and never had this happen. I know DCU has called me AFTER I made a purchase to see if I was the one that actually authorized it but I never got declined WHILE making a purchase until now. I know it varies from one person to another. I guess if you have other accounts with them, they compare your spending habits.I might be one of the few that actually likes when a CCC sees something suspecious they take immediate action by decling transaction.
Good your card was reinstated. But they are not protecting you. They are protecting themselves. There is nothing for them to see. no way for them to know if suspicious unless your card was present. Only because of your first use. This is very common. After you will not have that issue again. Congrarts on your card. even if you tried $3 they would have done that. not based on the amount you were spending. unless you were at atm taking cash out.
which i doubt. Cap one is very good and not over paranoid like others. Caugh caugh. Barclays.
Lol you are absolutely right. I must remember to say "business love" or "they are business protecting me". I mustn't forget the "business" part lol.
Had a similar experience. After activating my Venture I made some small purchase: $20, $100. Then I went shopping for a BBQ to my local Ralphs and it got declined. Used one of my other cards to pay because I didn't want to hold up the line; the purchase was for $1150+ if I remember correctly.
Called it in, they said that the card was active and there "must have been a problem with the terminal". Went online and there was no hold on the card. Then the next day - bam a hold, a call, and a verification. They inquired about purchases etc. and released it. Then a couple of days go by and all of the sudden I login and there was another hold. Went through the verification process - again - and actually asked why they are doing this again. "We are protecting our new accounts from fraud" or something along the lines.
Guess this happens to Venture on a regular basis, but everything has been gravy ever since.
You guys seem pretty chill about this. It has never happened to me, but I think that I would be highly pissed off. I understand the need for certain levels of fraud protection, but declining the first charge on a card is overkill, IMO. If I have received the card and gone through the trouble of activating the card, let me use it without the embarrassment of being declined. I get easily flustered by that type of thing and my face immediately turns bright red. I would be so ticked if I got declined for something like that.

I uderstand what you mean. What really makes what they do kinda sad is that it is never a warning first. The paper work they send never says you'll have a good chance of getting declined on your first purchase although they can decline ANY purchase regardless of price for any reason they deem fit. It seems to always be by surprise. But there isn't much one can do about it. It's all business at the end of the day. I hope you never have to go through with it. The best way I can think of to prevent this is to give them a heads up before you make a large purchase. I didn't know and because of that i missed the mileage points I would have gotten with that $700 purchase I made. Especially since I had planned this out before I tried to execute it. Business as usual.

I believe this same situation happened to another poster on this forum, and Cap1 actually made it right. Forget what it was they went to buy, but it was pretty substantial. Venture card was decline, and the poster had to use another card. They called up Cap1, told them what happened, and Cap1 actually credited them those miles points. Maybe worth a shot?

It didn't work. Cap1 told me that since the card was declined I cannot get those miles unless I use the card again. The more I think about it the more bummed I get. I believe with my $700 purchase thats 1400 miles gone down the drain. I can still meet the spend bonus but now I have to spend an extra $700. I'm not so sure I want to do that.
Will I have a better chance with EO?
