UPDATE - it works! Using Plastiq for rent now doesn't code as a purchase for Amex?

Glad this was worked out, i was about to panic a little. I'm planning on the Amex Platinum next month and using Plastiq to pay rent to hit the SUB. I could hit SUB without it, but paying rent with Plastiq is an easy way to guarantee hitting it without figuring out all other bills to pay.

Or do what I do and just manipulate deductions/withholding to need quarterly tax payments which in my case were around 5K each... or nearly identical to 4 x SUB's if I decided to roll hard on them (which admittedly I'm scaling back on for various reasons).

Lenders re-evaluate their policies when it comes to transactions and rewards every so often: make change, see result, iterate over time.

Generally speaking if a given reward isn't meeting it's desired result, then it will be changed.  Janus is right on that front, not quite sure what happened here as apparently some confusion over in Amex land but I think I can safely say that rent (and taxes) meeting the SUB and then limited use further, isn't what the lenders want.
