USAA Question

I've been with USAA for 2+ years. I use them for banking, investing, and I have three insurance products. All my FICO scores are mid to high 700s. However, I still haven't been offered the Amex card on "my offers" page...why is that? The only reason I can think of is my "occupation" as listed on the site. I'm a full-time fed, however, I'm also a full time grad student, so I list myself as "a student" to get discounts on my car insurance. Could this be preventing me from getting the Amex offer on the webpage?

Any thoughts or experiences to share? Do you think if I change my occupation will it complicate the insurance matter? Or, does it not even really matter...my occupation listing, and is it something else I'm not thinking about? Hmm....

Re: USAA Question

I thought the AMEX was only offered to the military members now, with or without the rewards and the MC was offered to non-military members without the rewards. Not sure, they seem to change it all frequently. IIRC most everybody that gets one card and applies for the other got it as well with the same CL. I applied for both within minutes of each other and got 20K on each. I never received any offers for them.

Stuck in a student status? Ask a CSR?

Re: USAA Question

You can get the AmEx without being a "full" member, but the differences will probably be -- as it is with the MC, the APR and also credit limit.

Go in and edit your profile.  When it comes time to renew your auto insurance you can always tell them that you are also a full-time student.  Worst they can do is then ask you to fax in proof of student status -- usually just a valid student ID.

Re: USAA Question

Good points. I e-mailed CSR this morning. And, if I don't get any clarity by the afternoon, I plan to swithc it up anyways, per Underh20, and see what happens. A social experiment of sorts, lol.

They offered me an AmEx two and a half years ago, and I've never been military. I'm a full member, as is Pj1369, due to our being dependents of active duty or former active duty members.

PJ, they didn't offer me the AmEx until I had had the MC for two years, two months. And even then, I'd been a member for 25 years or something. Same for DD#1 --2+ years with the MC before the AmEx came along.

I think there's just a built-in delay for many of us when it comes to the AmEx.

Re: USAA Question

I agree, hauling. I just heard back from CS at USAA. They said my occupation is not considered at all with CC offers...however, does everyone get the student credit card offer then?

It seems, it just takes time. I think I could get it if I called an applied. But, I'm going to wait until my 5% cash back is reset in oct, then I'll get the USAA Amex ::fingers crossed::...it will be the final card for the collection, lol.

Re: USAA Question

I do not know if this will help out but me(25) and the wife(21) are both active duty, when she clicks on the cc link it brings up the student cc offer and the master card. When I click on the link it brings up AMEX and the master card. I was slightly curious about this as well, but thought maybe it was based on age? I have another friend who's 21 as well and he gets the student cc and master card offers......

I think you're right. I started to come to that deduction after I read the CSR's msg. I think offers are based on age, credit, and length and depth of customer relationship. Interesting...thanks!

Re: USAA Question

I've only been a member since Jan, but I have a Roth IRA, renters&car insurance, and a checking&savings account with USAA and they have my military direct deposit. So maybe those things could factor in as well? They might not even know their own criteria.....lol.

Re: USAA Question

Good point. They probably don't and I think the offers are not really well matched.

I also have a roth with them, an investment account, a savings, a checking, renters, valuable prop, and car insurance with them, and my DFAS direct deposit -- so I assume it's because I'm 23 I don't see the offer, but I can still apply...randomness.
