USSA Member question

I started a membership with USAA about 3 years ago,for the credit monitoring service. I have not used the account for 2 1/2 years. I can still log in. I have heard you dont have to have been in the service to open a checking/savings or credit card etc. When I try to open an account it says im not eligible. Says have to be a service member or familly member. Well I have seen plenty of post, where people say different. Also I was raised by my uncle, who was in the navy, would that count?

I would check their website if that doesn't help then I would call.  I have a credit monitoring service also and had 2 now 1 cc.  I am a full member because my father became a member (which a made him)  at that time he just had to open up one I think it was insurance product.

That was just last year, since then I have opened up an account for my wife and children.  To open up the account I had to just give his name and I don't remember either his SS# or service date.

Re: USSA Member question

I believe they've changed to be more insular recently, similar to NFCU, no longer opening non-military connected memberships:

"USAA Federal Savings Bank, effective to August 27, 2013, closed all membership to non veterans. In other words, unless you can connect yourself to someone in your family or have some form of military service (as defined by USAA), you cannot be a member. Back to the fall of 2009 it was that way and even restrictive to military personnel. If you are a member of USAA as a non veteran you can remain a member as long as you have active account(s), except you cannot participate in property and casualty products. All other military based memberships remain unchanged."

Penfed honestly has better credit cards I think, and is still open to anyone who donates to their causes ($15 or $20ish).

Re: USSA Member question

Yeah, they changed it. You have to be military affiliate or family to be eligible for their products now.

Re: USSA Member question

USAA used to be closed to most non-military. They opened it up the fall of 2009. Then as you have read in this thread they narrowed the membership virtually back to what it was for pre 2009.

So if I was a full member thru my father before I can no longer get all their products now that they have changed back?  I thought it was always opened to military and family of military with full membership.
