@BluePoodle wrote:He has a decent work history. You don't mention his income or if he lives at home (but it sounds like he does) so as long as he has a generated FICO score he should be ok as his report will be clean (assuming the AU accounts don't have any lates and are low util). But look at his scores first. How long has he been an AU on your cards and how old are those cards? Those will be factors. Does he have an auto loan in his name? He needs 6 months of history to generate a FICO, but since you mentioned he has a FACO score, I would assume that he has at least the 6 month history for his score to generate.
I think in a case with a thin clean file, the idea is to go ahead and do a spree (if you think he is ready/mature enough to handle it) and gauge it by each result. Start with the card he want the most and is most likely to get (my thought is Barclay SM or an Amex card) and then build from there. If he gets a denial have him call in and recon it. I would look at 3-5 cards at the most. I think 3 is probably the most I would want my 19 year old to deal with at least in the begining, but I realize ever situation is different. I think the Discover it or Chase Freedom might be other options, but you don't mention if he would prefer Cash or Point rewards. Just find out what he prefers and work from there.
Yes, he lives at home and I'm estimating that he makes around 15-16k a year. He has been an AU on maybe 3 of my cards for I'm guessing maybe a year. The rest of the cards I obtained 6 months ago and added him. No auto loan, he pays cash for all of his vehicles, motorcycles and 4 wheelers. Has never had a loan. (He's great at saving up until he gets what he wants).
Since he's been an AU on all of my cards, I have only given him the AMEX card to use in order to provide him with the teaching of how to use the card by charging and paying off within a week. Since he has been doing this for a year now, I know that he will have no problem once he gets his own card. The rest of my cards that he's an AU on came in his name and he had me put them all up and he doesn't touch them (although still earns the benefit by us using and paying them). When he gets his new cards, he will give me back his AU AMEX and start using his (1 at a time, paying off, then rotating so that they all get a little usage here and there to get them started). He has no intention of carrying all of them or using all of them at the same time.
Honestly, he has no clue what he wants or anything about cc's. I'm sure he wouldn't mind having a card that earned points that he can cash in for credit toward his bill.
Well...tried Sallie and got:

Well that one worked, but as always, they never tell you how much your limit is. Sigh

Which Amex? Barclays may go either way. Worst case you have him call and ask for recon. The Amex was a good move.
Did the BCE since it's 3% on grocery & 2% on gas stations-which is what he currently uses my AMEX for.
Well Chase gave a message at the end saying to call them right away with a ref # then proceeded to tell him that he doesn't have enough established credit in his own name and he should try applying for gas cards or store cards. Sigh

I had that happen on mine. Daughters was instant approval, mine was not. Go figure. I would call in on recon, they may just want to ask a few questions. Not sure of their weekend hours.
Congrats on the BCE though!

I would still attempt to recon....It is worth a shot anyway.
I would consider Discover, I think they are good with thin files.
I am sitting here laughing with this look on my face because Capital One said no. Um...ok. The worse card out there that gives small $300 amounts said no. Really? My daughter is also and AU on my cards and they gave her a $300 limit just last week. LOL
Getting discouraged now. Also, why is it none of these applications even bother to ask you how long you've been on your job? Does that not even matter anymore? Geesh.
I would recon any denial, since he is taking the HP. But I would maybe try for Discover and stop there.
Did you ever get a FICO score for him?
