Breakage is unused rewards. Because AMex only allows certain increments, there is a chance you'll have rewards left over that never get used.
I also don't like the Amex set up. Amex also recently changed their display graph to view your YTD rewards on the BCP. It's now harder to know how much you've spent in the grocery category with the new display (quick tip: add Cash Back earned + Pending and divide by 0.06). Very frustrating. They're trying to make it difficult to know when you're close to your 6 K max. Of course, Amex has some of the best cards to churn so Ill deal with it.
My regular cards:
AARP is most used by transactions 3% rest. (I dont cook) and 3%gas
Freedom Unlimited most used by $ amount 1.5% to maximize UR points to transfer to travel partners
Sapphire Preferred 2x dining if I want the UR Points instead of aarp cash
Discover IT for 5% catagories, someone said a single person cant get to $1500 per quarter eating out, LOL! they also have a ton of 0% for a year on new buy offers and BT offers
Also use INK Preferred for 3x UR Points on travel and cell phone bill, cable, internet bump
Bank of America also has great BT offers
Others in my profile have occasional use

$1500 in purchases, not rewards, be careful!
What is a setup card? A non-category card?
@OmarR by "set up card," OP meant "card setup."
@Anonymous I think @signaturecardmember just missed an apostrophe and stated that "someone said a single person can't get to $1500 per quarter eating out." Yeah, I'm afraid to admit I easily spend half of that each quarter at Dunkin' Donuts alone. LOL
If by setup card you mean primary card then:
Paypal business debit/ MC combo for 3% (when possible). Also..
5% Utilities
5% Cell Phone
6% Groceries
5% Rotating
3% Dining
3% Gas
3% Travel/Hotels
3% Movies, + Video Games
3% Netflix,Hulu,Spotify
5% Amazon (+ PIF over time no interest)
@Anonymous wrote:Not sure what set up card is, but here is my current strategy.
AMZ for Amazon Spend - 5% (note: get the STORE CARD, not the CC if you are a churner).
Unless you need some other features of the Chase card (such as 5% of WF, if you spend more than $6K on groceries)

Amex is a little better than they once were... used to you could only take redemptions on the BCP/BCE cards in $25 increments, but now there's only a $25 minimum. Once you get to $25 the redemption can be any amount equal to or over that.
I admit that their delayed reporting and lack of transparency is frustrating at times, though.
In my signature + Uber for cell phone and propel for sub.

Pharmacy is 2% with Amazon. Also, Costo card offers 4% back on all gas (was wondering why use the AMEX if you already shop at Costco).
