What's up with Discover auto-denying my CLI requests?

I keep hearing that Discover is generous with CLIs, which may be encouraging me to be fast and loose with the LUV button, but I really like discover and the 4th quarter bonus categories are great for my christmas shopping and I want a higher limit to use. Here's my history- Discover was only my 3rd account, and I was in the low 600's when they approved me in June '16, $1200 SL. In September I pulled the LUV button and got a measly $500, so $1700 total. Since then I've cleaned up my credit and opened a bunch (ok, too many) new accounts, so I assume this is what is spooking them. I've pulled it numerous times, and without hesitation I get a "Sorry we cannot approve your credit limit increase request at this time." message. I haven't gotten the letters to explain it. My latest TU score on their site is 778. They're not soft pulling anything when i hit the LUV button, and only SP TU for the monthly FICO update. So something on my account is flagging it as "NO INCREASE". Is it just the time? Could it be something else?

Here's my list of accounts:

AMEX PRG - opened 09/16 - no balance

AMEX ED - Opened 09/16 - no balance- 2000  limit

Capital one VO - Opened 09/2015 - no balance - 5500 limit

Chase FU - Opened 04/2016 - $1051 balance (will be PIF) - 6000 limit

Chase CSP- Opened 08/2016 - 5000 limit

Citi DC - opened 09/2016 - $50 bal - 10,000 limit (50 was an accident)

Comenity Ulta - Opened 10/2016 0 bal 750 limit, never used (only opened because of "lack of experience with retail cards" listed on another denial- that could be a whole other thread

Discover - Opened 06/2016, $1700, no balance, use frequently and pay off multiple times a month

FNB Omaha Amex - Opened 08/16 - no balance, $3,000 limit (useless card, planning to close)

Penfed Rewards - Opened 10/16 - $76 balance (accident), $17,000 limit

Wells Fargo Rewards- Opened 10/16 - no balance - $6000 limit

So....I went on a spree and now have too many cards...So do I just quit CLI'ing? I have no derogs, one car loan, all accounts in good standing.

PS AMEX denied my 90-day CLI also. I've spooked them somehow. I'm not surprised by AMEX though, because they denied my apps several times before finally letting me in.

I'll take any other advice also, if you see what I'm doing wrong.

I would go to the garden for at least 6 months, and let your CLs grow some.  From what I see, it appears that you've obtained at least 6 CLs since September 2016.  I wouldn't app for any more cards, and just allow things to grow.

Not that the 31/61/91 day schedules are a sure thing, but you might be on the 91 day CLI schedule. The card is relatively new and the new accounts and INQs probably aren't helping matters, but you already know that. A little patience... Smiley Wink

Re: What's up with Discover auto-denying my CLI requests?

Here's my experience with them for the first year I had the card.

http://ficoforums.myfico.com/t5/Credit-Card-Approvals/My-first-year-with-Discover-Data-Points/m-p/47...

Looking at your info here though tells me you had a borderline approval with a $1200 limit. The $500 increase is going to most likely be where you'll be for maybe the first year every 90 days most likely.  With a 778 TU though w/o all the other info you posted I would say there's a good chance you should be seeing more.

The spree is probably being factored into things with your reduced AAOA, Inquiries, New Accounts.

I wouldn't bother closing anything at this point since you took the hit already on them and might as well gain the history by keeping them open since they're not costing you anything.  To get Discover to grow though instead of maxing it out as you have noted making multiple payments they do have a denial reason of "escalating balance" that might be on your letter of denial if they do send one.  Pull back and show some restraint...pick a monthly bill and set it to autopay  aka shows usage and auto payments... they like to be used but not abused.

Once you do this and they feel more comfortable the veil might get lifted and the doors to the CLI kingdom may open up a bit more.

So, quit apping, keep the accounts, reduce the usage on Discover, and be patient / persistent with Discover!

Re: What's up with Discover auto-denying my CLI requests?

im wondering if even 3+ months down the road would even be enough to start entertaining clis on the discover....

how much did your score drop after the spree?

it took me at least 3 months to get back to the score pre-app minispree...(2 cards in a month and a half period roughly)

Id head to the garden and wait it out a bit.....

Re: What's up with Discover auto-denying my CLI requests?

@austinguy- thank you, lol, I needed that, you're right

@joltguy- the spree didn't do much damage actually, my AAoA already sucked, and my inquiries were above that threshold where an additional couple don't hurt much. The spree coincided with the last of my baddies falling off, so I'm in the mid/high 700's across the board post spree with

So so I just got the denial letter from discover, the only reason listed is "INSUFFICIENT EXPERIENCE WITH CURRENT CREDIT LIMIT" so, I'll just hold my horses and grow. I'm antsy.

I would like like to say I've been reading a lot about bust-out fraud, and I believe my recent behavior may be consistent with what credit card companies look for to identify bust-out fraud, so I REALLY need to cool it, or I have worse AA coming than a CLI denial.

You'll be fine.  The insufficient message is normal when you're aggressive with Discover.  When I was doing weekly requests I would get that all of the time between approvals.  Just take a break from it all and maybe hit the button every other month like I've switched to and they'll loosen up a bit.  You added a ton of accounts in a short time with some pretty decent results and should keep them.  I'd ditch the comenity account since the "not enough retail experience" was a bogus reason for denial anyway.  There's no differentiation between retail / CU / Bank as far as scoring goes.  They just clutter things up to the point of a bunch of sub 1000 limits and kill your stats.  Just give the apps a rest for a year and let things grow with CLI's and you'll be surprised by the growth and strengthening of your profile as you go along.

I'm in the same boat as you with them. They give me tiny CLI's now and then, but only if I ask nicely.

The decline message you're getting means they have 'insufficient experience with your present credit limit'.

Basically it means you have to wait 31 days between CLI's... sometimes 61 days or even 91 days.
