A couple of months ago out of shear boredom I apped for pre-qualify with Credit One to see the plethora of top notch offerings they had for me.
(I did say shear boredom)
I was immediately flat out denied. I was shocked then I LOLed.

Generally though I reserve my shock for my approvals. I simply expect any application to be a denial.
Consider yourself lucky. I did the same once several years ago for giggles and grins and they bombarded me with emails and mailers afterward for almost a year before gradually tapering down to nothing.
Chase United Explorer card when I was 1/24 and FICO 8 scores in the 800's. I had three existing Chase cards. Called for recon and they allowed me to have the card, but no new CL, I had to movve some from my other cards.
Batting 100% and been in the garden 5 yrs 4 mo waiting to see what the citi elite card is all about if it comes out this fall.

Really isn't that hard once you find reward programs that you like and having a large amount of business spend also helps, it feels like I get SUBs every month......Stick to a plan, be patient and don't listen to all the noise.
It also makes it easier going independent on hotel stays and only flying mainly AA and sometimes on Delta (I have flip flopped now and then).
Citi will peak my insterest though, I did have the Prestige card back then and closed it when everything got nerfed.
Same thing with the Discover Secured - like wth?
The most shocking denial was on Citi Costco. They rejected my application with Fico8 of 810 and it was the day after closing my mortgage. They were citing too many inquiries (all of them were for mortgage). The recon call for 10 minutes did not go anywhere and they were requesting to come back in one year . It was the only lender that rejected me for CC in that year and I got approved for multiple credit cards in a few weeks after the mortgage.
I eventually came back to Citi, with a clean sheet of 6 months without inquiry, and I finally got approved for Premier to buy a few left appliances.

For real, right?
im giving you thousands of dollars to secure my card. Seriously disco, you can't lose. What gives?
Wells Fargo Visa Signature : this was a card that while earning 1% itself, boosted portal redemptions pooled from other cards by 50% One suggested strategy was to get this first.
I applied and was rejected. When I called I was told the reason was that I had had balances on more than one card in the last 6 months. I was surprised as I PIF, so this was just statement balance type stuff, I tried to explain but was told if I thought the report was incorrect (which I didn't) contact the credit bureau concerned. When the letter arrived it showed my score was 850 (possibly out of 900) with that same reason.
So that was the only time I would have benefitted from AZEO, a very strict form where the "EO" is the same card for 6 months.
This was my second rejection. The first bein Golden One who found out that they couldn't provide the credit card in my state, after doing a HP. But I've whined about that recently.

Agreed, it's very easy to stay away from applying for credit cards, allowing inquiries to age off. Like 5 years went by quickly for me, I had the cards I needed. Trying and failing to keep out of debt and just working on building up my cash.
Can you tell me about "going independent" with hotel stays? I'm looking to possibly traveling some more and nicer hotels sound really appealing, bed and baths are awesome but don't have the marketing of Marriott, so obviously go rather unnoticed. Stayed in one in Savannah and absolutely loved it.
