What to do with Amex Surpass? AF just shown on statement

I have both the Aspire and Surpass. Obvious choice here is to down grade the Surpass to a no AF Hilton Honors card this year. Is it safe to do that now that I have had the Surpass for 1 year and the 2nd year's AF just posted to my statement?

Will they pro-rate the AF and give me a partial refund?

What about asking for a retention offer on the the Surpass? I'll probably keep the Aspire because I like the perks of Hilton Diamond. I'll probably save my points for at least 1 Hilton stay this year.

Since you've had the surpass for a year why not try to move some of the limit to the aspire. Then you could downgrade to the no af card and sock drawer it.

I'm coming up on the same decision in the next couple of months with my Delta gold. Was thinking of downgrading to the blue, but don't want to miss out on that easy 10k sub. I don't need the skymiles, but 10k is 10k. 🤔

I'm in the same boat. I'm going to see if I can get an upgrade offer for a second aspire card. They normally offer upgrade offers even if you already have an aspire card. At least that was the case pre Covid. I can only assume they wouldn't mind collecting another a high annual fee. The resort credit and free night pay for the fee by itself. Even if you can't really use the airline travel credit.

I would probably wouldn't downgrade if you haven't received the SUB for the no annual fee card. I would probably transfer available credit and cancel. Then re-apply for the no annual fee card to collect the SUB and see if they give you an upgrade offer for that card. Hilton was very aggressive In Offering upgrade offers before. I think they would still continue. Especially because Amex blight like 1 billion usd in Hilton points a few months back.

that's the plan. i have already moved all but 2k from my Surpass to Aspire. just want to make sure that is ok to downgrade or maybe i should ask for a retention offer first to see if it's worth another year 95$ AF?

good idea on the upgrade offer. the Aspire airline credits, i believe they are letting you use at US groceries stores and restaurants now. unfortunately for me, i'm outside the US right now and have no desire to come back any time soon so a 2nd Aspire card probably doesnt make sense for me.

I'm at 5/24 right now and getting a Chase card is higher priority then another sub on the no AF card. Thanks for letting us know the option of upgrading to a 2nd Aspire.

Because of COVID-19, I won't be making any trips for the next twelve months, so in a few weeks I'll be downgrading both of my travel cards that have annual fees (the CSR and the United Explorer).  I know I could just keep earning points and miles to redeem after the COVID-19 crisis has passed, but I want all my credit card rewards to be in the form of cash during this time of economic uncertainty.  Points and miles can be devalued, and airlines can go out of business.  I won't be asking Chase to reallocate any credit limits.

From my experience with Surpass, it's a card worth keeping. A while back I accepted an upgrade offer from the Surpass to the Aspire, but after doing it realized I probably would have been better off just sticking with the Surpass, as its benefits were a better fit for my spend and travel habits.

I recently received a nice retention offer on my Aspire card, so yes I think it's a good idea to ask for a retention offer on the Surpass. I didn't even say I was thinking of cancelling. I just said that the annual fee was steep, and with Covid I was not really able to get that much value out of the card, so I would appreciate some kind of retention offer. And they gave me a nice one.

Just to be sure you're aware, you cannot qualify for that easy 10k if you have Gold, Platinum, or Reserve, or have had any of them in the past 90 days.

OP, they will definitely prorate the annual fee if you product change.  Might be worth calling to see if there is a retention offer first, though.
