you know it's funny you say that " time goes faster when you aren't thinking about credit"
Cause I literally went from 1 end of the spectrum to the other. I spent the last 6-7 years not having any credit cards, never thinking about credit. Not caring at all.
then when I took the time to properly learn how it all worked and decided to get back Into it, and now I am the other end of the spectrum where I probably care too much. Like I wanna make up for all that lost time? Which I know is impossible
Exactly, I started here 7-8 years ago, got all (most) the cards I have and quit the forums not thinking about it or credit or opening new accounts. Guess how many accounts I've opened since I first got here? 3 with an average of like 2 years apart. I have two inquiries on my entire credit report. 1 card 1 car loan they fall off in less than 5 months.
use what you have, they'll grow and in 6 mo or a year you'll be able to find something else that'll be useful - and get approved.
you said it yourself: YOU CARE TOO MUCH.
This is kindness, not me being harsh.
Credit One is owned by a large collection company. That to me speaks volumes yet in some cases may be useful in the very short term. Close it and rid yourself of this albatross.
I want to thank everyone for their comments and taking the time to respond.
So it seems the consensus is that having open accounts with positive payment history is no better than closed accounts with positive history. As positive is positive regardless of if the card is still active or not. The only benefit to keeping this card open would be the continued positive reporting moving forward. So
-if I kept it open I would have 3 cards reporting positive monthly payment history moving forward instead of 2. But that could be easily rectified by closing down this sub prime card and replacing it with a better one.
so keeping this card open just for the sake of having an additional open account is pointless and not beneficial. Especially if I replace it with a better card. So that I don't lose any thickness on my profile.
I don't think it's pointless, but that the cost for the minuscule benefit isn't worth it.
what are your current accounts & limit?
give it 3 months, figure out what your next account is and give it a shot.

I thanked everyone without remembering to include your user names so I'm not sure if everyone saw it, so I just wanted to thank you all again.
in terms of current cards I have a cap one savor one and chase freedom unlimited which are both $1500 and then my credit one is currently at $500, which I'm hoping will go up to at least $900 when I hit that 1 year mark.
So, assuming it goes up to $900 I would be losing up to about 30% of my total credit lines. If I go off the current $500 limit it's close to 1/6th of my total limit.
Credit one might waive your annual fee if you ask.
I have a credit one Amex with a 550cl because it doesn't cost me anything anymore
i called in April and told them that my credit has improved substantially and that I was shopping around for new cards without annual fees and was CONSIDERING closing all my cards with fees
they immediately transferred me to an accounts manager who told me he would waive my fee for 6 months.
they also credited me back part of the last fee I had already paid.
they told me to call back as soon as the fee shows up again in six months and they would waive it for another six months.
just something to think about if you are that worried about losing the credit limit.

This is a great idea. Won't hurt at all.
Yes I have considered that too, many people have said that calling and saying "I'm considering closing my account" got them to drop fees. Since getting my better cards I have completely stopped using my credit one card cause I don't want to give them any money anymore. I don't even want to use the card cause I haven't even wanted them to get swipe fees. In my opinion, they don't deserve to make money off me anymore. The only reason I've kept it alive is to help my aggregate util.
For what it's worth, I did also hear horror stories of people calling and saying that exact sentence and the company immediately closed their account. Even though the customer only said they were "considering closing it"
I guess it's part of the language gap when you get a CSR that doesn't really understand you.
