chase and unrequested/unsolicited product change email

Hello all,

I received an email on 9/26 that told me by oct 7th my chase freedom was going to be changed to a freedom unlimited.

I never asked or inquired about this. There was is no language in the email to opt out. Ive reached out via a secure message to see what i need to do to stop this from happenning.

 

I use the card eight or nine times a year and pay it to a zero balance, which it has now. I do take advantage of the 5% catagories using them fully usually. This is not going to be a benifit to change to the unlimited version for me.

 

I'll update when i get an answer about if this can be stopped. Just wanted to put it out there for data.


general data p-

this card is about 15 years old

I have three other chase cards (another freedom, a freedom unlimited, and a slate)

fico in high 700s, my cc usage overall below 20%

I would think if they're moving you to a fee card from one without, you would have cause to complain, but Freedom is not listed in their site of available cards, and it doesn't have a fee, so it's a lateral move IMO. I just closed my chase checking account and have a no fee Chase Sapphire (not Sapphire Preferred) card, which also isn't offered anymore.  Should Chase decide to move my account to an AF card I'll just cancel it.

It isn't uncommon for banks to migrate discontinued products to similar existing products.

I doubt if any issuer does that, obviously cause way too many complaints

Multiple reports have surfaced over the last few days about this conversion.   Chase stopped accepting new applications for the Freedom about 4 years ago, so it shouldn't be a big surprise that they're finally getting around to removing it entirely from their portfolio. 

 

If you don't want a Freedom Unlimited you can always call and ask now to PC the Freedom to a Flex (allowing a PC to a co-branded card is a big YMMV) or if you already have another Chase card you can transfer the limit over and close the Freedom.

A much closer match would be to Freedom Flex, but presumably the switch from Visa to MC is an issue.   OP already has a Freedom Unlimited, and I can't think of a good use case for having 2!

Haven't received anything about my freedom OG moving to anything, but I hope, if it does, it's a 5% Flex and not a 1.5% Unlimited!

Yeah I got the same email, called them the guy said he didn't know how to do it and will put a note saying to put a stop of the product change and says he will talk to a supervisor. Checked my account a few days ago and it changed to the freedom unlimited smh... 

 

Wish I could change it to the Marriott card instead...

So not unexpected-

"...the option to decline the upcoming change to a Chase Freedom Unlimited® credit card is not available".

 

As of today 10/1 the card has been switched in the online portal branding.

 

The play here for chase is bascially they get to save themselves $300 a year (less swipe fees they make) by doing this.
