Re: how long before a card is cancelled for inactivity?

A never used Finger Hut account can go five years before they will close it.....    Smiley Happy

It is by will alone I set my mind in motion.....
Always follow these rules: Only take a HP for a new account. Always use the best rewards card for that reward category. Don't close a card unless you know you really should. Never use more than 35% of a credit limit. Recon as much and as best you can. Use the introductory period to the best advantage. Get the signup bonus. Whenever possible PIF or balance transfer so you pay less in interest. Never give an excellent rating when it is actually the norm. Always look for a discount as more is always better.
Always accept candy from strangers because they have the best candy or from people you know have good candy.

Re: how long before a card is cancelled for inactivity?

I always call the company after I open a new accountv and ask what their policy is on inactivity. That means my discover and amex info are 2 years / 1 year old respectively but I just called Citi and US Bank today. Here are my notes:

Discover: usually 12 to 18 months, typically mail a 30 day warning before closing
American Express: accounts are automatically reviewed after 13 months, if they decide to close it then you get a notification in the mail it is closed but no advanced warning
US Bank: 3 months of inactivity they close account, no warning
Citi: 2 years will send 1st warning, if no response another letter 26 months, if no response, at 28 months will set to inactive

None of this is real world experience with getting an account actually closed. However it did come from a CSR at the company FWIW.

Re: how long before a card is cancelled for inactivity?

One important thing to remember about inactivity is that a number of myfico members have reported large CLD's on a card with as little as 4-6 months of inactivity. This has happened with different lenders and none of us really knows the exact time frame nor the threshold for this to happen.

It's important to be aware that while your card may not be closed outright, you may receive an unexpected and large CLD if you have a period of inactivity. I use each of my cards monthly for a small purchase to keep internal algorithms humming along smoothly as best I can. Smiley Happy
