I am blown away at some of these posts though. Obviously, there are some big spenders to justify those fees. I remember getting Amex green card offers in the '80's for $49 then later for $75 AF's. I've never considered owning a frequent flyer card with AF probably because my wife won't fly unless its an emergency and then I have to drug her.
It's not all big spenders though. Some of the cards, such as the hotel cards, will quickly more than pay for themselves iregardless of spend, n free stays, and similarly with those offering companion tickets. It's some of the more common choices here, such as CSP and PRG, that really do need a lot of spending to justify after the first year.

He's/she's got jokes.
My old starter cards are costing over 200.00 a year. I do need to close them. I aimed for all of my new cards without AF's & good rewards. AMEX is excellent in rewards. Almost wondering if I should switch over to the one with the yearly fee. Once I got past those little limit crappy ones, I really have no use for them. But everytime I call to cancel they talk me into keeping them "just a bit longer".

Eh, I can justify some AF's but I will be looking at changing cards and some AF will go up but many will disappear. Once I can get on Citi's radar i'm going to be looking hard at the Prestige but will only bite with the $350 AF.
CSP $95
Marriott $85
Amex Plat $450 my company will reimburse
Venture $59 will cancel if not waived
Delta Plat $195 will most likely downgrade to Gold @ $95
JCB $25
Ritz $395 will cancel after the 1st year
US Air $89 will cancel after the 1st year
Total $1,393
It's a lot of AF but each one has a benefit that outweighs the AF (for me and my spend)
CSP - UR points are more valuable than CB & primary auto coverage
Marriott - Beyond the free night (cat 1-5 isn't very useful for me), the 15 night elite credit & 5 pts on Marriot spend
Amex Plat - Delta Sky Club access & $200 airline credit (Delta gc's)
Venture - no benefit, will not pay the AF
Delta Plat or Gold - MQD waiver (flights are inexpensive so far this year, I will hit the miles requirement easily, but prob not the MQD)
JCB - Uncapped 3% CB
Ritz - will only keep for 1 year and will get $600 in airline gc's and 140K points
US Air - will only keep for 1 year and will get 50K mile
Barclaycard Arrival+ - $89
Chase Ink Bold - $95
Barclaycard Arrival+ is definitely worth it, in a year and a half of having it I've received over $3,800 in basically cash back and currently have about $200 worth of cash back waiting to be redeemed.
Chase Ink Bold hasn't had the AF hit yet, but I have almost 160,000 UR sitting in my account (between the Bold and the Freedom) that I plan on using one day for a trip overseas.
Also, since I use both cards for my business I write both the AF's off on my taxes.
@bigblue7722 wrote:So if you had to pay all your AF for the year how much would it add up to?
$360.
@bigblue7722 wrote:Which cards are you thinking about closing??
None. I wouldn't be paying the AF's if there wasn't a net gain.
Amex SPG - $65 - Just got it, will keep for a year and see if I want to close or not.
Citi HHonors Reserve - $95 - Fee was worth if when I was using it heavily as a combo with Amex HHonors no fee version. But now that I am trying out Amex SPG, going to have to decide which way I wanna go. Hilton or SPG. One stays, one goes.
Virgin America Visa - $49 - I am torn on this one. I try to fly Virgin as much I can, and the annual $150 credit for a companion ticket more then makes up for the fee. But Comenity bugs me! So, we'll see about this one.
So that's $209 total.
No AF's right now for me. I cannot find any AF card that I could justify the fee on after the first year.
