They said you had to because that's going to be mandatory come October 1st with the liability shift so they're getting ready now.  Once everyone is used to it, it shouldn't take any longer than swiping it.  Remember it's for your protection as well.

i just figured since the machines are still technically hybrid then i could still swipe if i wanted

then again.... i did sit there a solid 10 seconds while the lady stared at me, then realized she forgot to press the button on the register screen lol.

All "correctly" configured machines won't allow a swipe if the card has a chip (as otherwise there is no additional security).   Some retailers, such as Walmart, had turned off the requirement because of customer confusion, but presumably that will have stopped by Oct.

They may have disabled the swipe feature.  Maybe they're getting their employees ready for the change.  That's much better then those retailers who will be scrambling come October to get up to speed.  I suspect a lot of small businesses are going to be shocked when they start having to pay for fraudulent cards because they didn't change their terminals.

Re: using the chip and signature feature

My first time using it was also at Walmart and I didn't know how to use it properly so I use inserted it and removed quickly. The cashier didn't know as well so she had to get the manager. Apparently, you're supposed to let it sit there once you insert it and then let the screen load and then sign. I don't mind it at all if there's the added protection.

Re: using the chip and signature feature

I did the chip reader for the first time myself at Walmart yesterday. I must have lucked out, because the cashier walked me through it and the total time of doing the chip method took maybe 20-25 seconds. I didn't mind it.

However, almost every other business in my area doesn't have the chip readers, so... may be a while before I get to do it again. I don't shop at Walmart regularly, in fact it's a rare occurence now.

Re: using the chip and signature feature

hopefully we get used to it and it gets faster because 20 seconds just to pay is semi ridiculous lol

Same thing happened to me this week while using my Apple Visa.
