hopefully we get used to it and it gets faster because 20 seconds just to pay is semi ridiculous lol

I have been using chip & pin technology for the past 10+ years now and encounter no difference in speed when I swipe a US card or use a European chip & pin card. Only the chip & signature takes  a bit longer because the cashiers are not prepared to get ready to hand over the slip for signature and get confused when they see  chip cards that require signature ....lol

Re: using the chip and signature feature

Wal Mart in my town requires use of the chip feature, but nobody else even seems to know what it is. My QS1 has the chip. I asked the guy at Game Stop if I should swipe or insert it and he didn't have any clue what I was talking about. My only problem with using the chip is that I'm afraid I might leave my card sticking in the machine. Luckily walmart's machine makes a loud noise reminding you to take it out

I think this was discussed in a thread recently, and someone suggested (and I agree), that the chip process feels longer because with a swipe, I swipe and put the card away while the transaction is processing, whereas with chip the card has to stay in the reader and only when done can I put it away (so serial rather than parallel).   Of course, there are plenty of times where the swipe doesn't record correctly, and you have to take the card out again!

Re: using the chip and signature feature

Hey! I didn't realize when I had some t-shirts printed at a little local shop, that THAT's what was different about their machine. They do it for me, in that they have the machine on their side so I still haven't inserted a card with a chip. But at the time I didn't put two and two together. Now I know.

@Anonymous here I think that it was fast the old fashioned way, before debit cards and bar code scanners.  You prayed to get a good "Cash Register Lady".  If she was good, you could get checked out fast with her key-punching all the values manually.  I would pray that every can of soup had a price sticker our my entire day was shot.  It would take several minutes for "Ralph" to walk his slow @Anonymous back to aisle 10 and get the price for a can of chicken noodle.

If the star aligned, it would only take 15 minutes.....tops.  Now that was a good day.

And here when I read 'the old fashioned way' I thought you were going to talk about a knuckle buster:

i just figured since the machines are still technically hybrid then i could still swipe if i wanted

It would defeat the security benefit of EMV if the terminal allowed the card to be swiped.
