That's a very good explanation. Just a couple of points:
Soft inquiries show up on your reports only when you view them (and only on reports that come directly from the CRAs, not on the reports you get here from myFICO). Soft inquiries don't count against your score.
Hard inquiries show up on your reports for anyone who views them, and they count against your score for one year from the date of the inquiry. They drop from your reports after two years. The number of points a hard inquiry costs depends on a lot of factors. It can be anywhere from 0 to 10 or more, depending on the score before the inquiry and how many inquiries were already on the report.
Soft pull = soft inquiry
Hard pull = hard inquiry
