My child has been added as an au on a few card see below. I did this to help build his credit so that when he goes to apply for his first CC that he will have a good start. He has a few years to go until that happens but I am wondering if adding him was a mistake because I now am thinking about the effects this could have on his AAOA when I or his father pass away these cards would close thus closing his oldest accounts. I have heard stories about people acquiring somoenes account I know a user on here has a Discover card that they acquired from their mother. However I doubt all issuers do this and who knows if Discover does. I want to build his credit but maybe authroized user's were the wrong decision what does everyone think?
USAA CC - $26,000 opened in 1996
BOFA Unlimited Cash Formerly BOFA AMEX - $15000 Opened in 1991
NFCU Flagship - $30000 Openned in 2009
Lowes CC - $10000 Why? I don't really know mostly because they back date or so I here. Opened in 2007.
I was the authorized user on my husbands credit card and I told him to remove me 2 years ago and it's still reporting 2 years later? Maybe it will be the same when the account holder passes????? I like this topic because I plan on adding my children when they get older, that's why I started building credit. Never thought about what would happen when I die what happens to their credit 🤔
Following because I have two younger AUs and am curious to see responses.
You're worried about the effect you passing away might have on your kid's credit? Just how soon are you planning on kicking the bucket? Hopefully you still have many years ahead of you, but let's just assume you'll be around for another 40 years. Closing an AU account will have no impact on your kid's credit if they have 40 years of their own solid history. I wouldn't waste any more time worrying about this if I were you.

How can one be worse off losing something than never having it ?
Nothing wrong with adding son as an AU

My money is on that you were never removed by your husband.
AU accounts are usually closed quickly.
Accounts are removed and not even shown in history like closed accounts.
It is like they never existed.

Not always true, at least not in my case. I called and took myself off a couple of my husbands Chase cards and they're still showing on my TransUnion report but not Equifax or Experian. I haven't been an AU on those cards in over a year, it does say terminated under responsibility though but also says open. 🤷♀️ 😆 I don't think it's doing anything for my scores but it's not hurting either, so I just never asked TU to take it off.
Ha! I'm planning on sticking around for a while knock on wood. Reading that made me forget about that worry and laugh.
