Any CU suggestions ?

I really would love to become a member of NFCU. All the positive feedback everyone here gives them is very encouraging. My father is retired AF and my brother is currently in the AF. Neither of them want to open a new account with anyone. They're stuck in their old school ways of thinking. My boyfriend is retired from the army, but I believe, membership has to be extended by a relative.

Can anyone suggest any other CU's I might qualify for and are somewhat comparable to NFCU. I live in the Dallas, TX area and I go to school full - time at a community college in Plano. I'm not familiar with an CU's around here or anyone else for that fact.

Any help will be appreciated !

Re: Any CU suggestions ?

You do not need a military relative to be a member of NFCU to join. Call NFCU membership services and explain your military family ties and you may be able to join.

Example: I was able to join because of my father's retirement (25 years Navy) and he is deceased. This did not qualify me in fact I could not qualify because he is deceased, however, because my mother is still living and a current annuitant, ( receiving payments through the D.O.D ), because of my father's retirement I qualified to join. Neither my father nor my mother have ever been a member of NFCU.

Now my entire family and their families are members.

If I were you I would call ASAP to be absolutely certain you cannot join through any of your military relationships. If you can qualify there is no better place to develope your financial relationship. IMHO

The CSRs in membership services are extremely helpful and will do their best, if you make all of your military relationships clear to them, to help you join.

Best of Luck!

Please post back here if you do call.

An NFCU member cannot sponsor just anyone.

An NFCU member can sponsor immediate family members. You may want to visit their website for further details.

Re: Any CU suggestions ?

Well, I decided to call customer service tonight and the rep told me a family member needed to be a member to sponsor me. Hmmm..... not sure what I can do.

Re: Any CU suggestions ?

You stated your father is retired AF. Does he receive retirement pay?

Did you specifically speak to the '"membership services department"?  The best CSRs in that department work in the day M-F EST.

You may want to try again tomorrow and ask for a supervisor in membership services. I was told three different answers by three different CSRs when I first applied.

I would not give up yet unless it is too much trouble and you would prefer to move on..

Maybe because my father was deceased and my mother is an annuitant I qualified. Even then, I was given several different answers by membership services related to my application.  One thing I am certain of is, no one in our entire family was ever a member when I applied.

Re: Any CU suggestions ?

The CSR asked for my member id # when I called and I let her know I wasn't a member and was interested in becoming one. She said she could help me with it.

My father still receives a retirement check and he also worked civil service on base too after retirement. I'm going take your advice and call again tomorrow. I really think it will be worth it if I can join !

Another alternative is USAA. I think he's eligible to join, from what you have posted, and if he joins, I think that he can sponsor you in. Do check to find out, though.

If you're interested, call USAA CS to clarify this. (800) 531-2265

Re: Any CU suggestions ?

I called NFCU this morning to inquire about joining. My son is an enlisted Navy man but he does NOT belong to NFCU and for some reason does not want to join(but I do). The rep I spoke to told me he did not have to be a member for me to join. Stunned,I called back and spoke to a different rep, that told me the same thing. My son did not have to be a member for me join. I asked what personal info about my son would they need to open my account(base, rank etc) he told me none since my son was not a member.

Called back 30 min later...........I am officially a member of NFCU!!

Too scared to app for CC thoughSmiley Happy
