Thanks plasticman for the info on NFCU as of this morning both my wife and myself are now members.
You are welcome!
You will completely enjoy your financial relationship with NFCU. IMHO
I called this morning and asked to speak to a Member Services Rep. and the CSR asked me what I was calling for. I told her I wanted to open an account and let her know my situation and she opened my savings and checking account for me. She said I should receive my account information/packet within 10 business days or so.
I'm going to wait till I receive my account information and apply for a credit card.
Thanks for the advice plasticman. I appreciate it !

You are very welcome.
You are the thrid member on this thread successfully joining NFCU without a family relation as a prior member to NFCU at anytime in the past.
Just a note: You will only need your "access number" to apply for a CC. You can apply for a CC anytime you wish to now. It does not concern NFCU whether you decide to apply now or at a later time. Do not think the timing of your application of the CC matters to NFCU one way or another.
Please post back and advise all members of your CC success with NFCU when you are ready.
ETA: You should have been given your "access number" already. If not, call back and ask for it provided you wish to apply for NFCU credit products before your information arrives by mail to you.
I was in a bit of a time crunch this morning when I spoke to CSR and neglected to get my access #. I just called back and got it.
I wasn't sure of I should wait to apply for a CC after I deposit money into my savings and checking accounts. They couldn't do a transfer from my current bank for deposits, just for loans and payments, so the CSR told me I could either mail in a deposit or wait till I receive my atm card and make a deposit at atm.
When I apply, I will definitely post, hopefully with a sucess story.

There is no need to wait unless you would prefer to. I did not have money deposited into the savings account yet and was approved for a 25k CL CC and a 15k Navchek LOC. All you need to do, if you choose to, is call the NFCU CC department give them your access number and apply by phone.
I suggest, if you do decide to apply, go to the NFCU website and choose which card best suits your needs before you make the call.
They will strictly pull a hard inquiry of your EQ report upon your application. In other words NFCU does not pull TU or EX for any of their credit products.

OK, I don't know how I missed the initial two posts on this thread, unless it was because I was so far behind on unread posts that I gave up and hit "read all." But I just now saw plasticman's suggestion about trying for membership via a surviving parent.
So I just now gave it a whirl. Here are my frantically-typed how-I-did-it notes:
Called 1-888-842-NFCU (6328). (no access number)
hit 3 - open a new account
hit 1 - become a NFCU member
a human!
--said it would take special approval because I'm trying to qualify by my mother's annuitant status as an Army widow, drawing a pension
took info/ app over the phone
after all my personal info, she asked my father's name --no DOB, no military ID#/ SSN, which I still know like every good dependent does
they will mail out the packet (if I'm approved) in several days, and I'll fund the savings (share) account then.
she asked if I wanted to open the checking now --nope, one checking with usaa is fine (didn't tell her that). I'll probably go with CD's or something unless and until I decide to do one of their credit products
never warned me about credit check, altho she has my ssn and dob
call back in a couple of days and give access number, and they can tell me if they let this life-long Army brat in
Thanks, plasticman! It would never have occurred to me to try this. We'll see what happens.
Hi Hauling,
You are more than welcome!
First, if your mother is an annuitant from the D.O.D you should qualify.
Second, the CSR you spoke was not very knowledgeable. You may want to call back in the day tomorrow (EST) and speak with another CSR directly in membership services instead. I always insisted on speaking with the membership services department when I applied. Just tell any other CSR you have a special case to speak with them about. It always seemed to me when I was applying that all the CSRs ( regardless of their department) want to be helpful with membership. However, most CSRs did not know the eligibility rules well enough unless the application was straight forward. Use my case as an example if you wish to. I told membership services my mother was too old to be interested and had no desire to give me her S.S.N. or join when I applied. I was told by membership services it was not even necessary.
If you do not hear what you want from the first CSR in membership services then ask for a supervisor. I did exactly this.
Third, It took me 3 times calling into NFCU before I was able to speak with a CSR whom new I qualified.
Fourth, there is no hard EQ inquiry for membership applications. I do not even think they soft EQ ( I cannot remember for sure).
No matter what you decide, in terms of handling your own application, good luck!

Thanks for the extra info and clarification!
Supposedly, I was talking to a membership specialist. But there's no telling. I agree, I'll call back in the daytime and seek a second opinion. Do you know where their call center is? I don't know when their 4:30 or 5 is compared to mine.
I'm still fascinated that she didn't ask for anything more than my father's name. And it's three very common, WASP-y, white bread names, so there are bound to be several dozen of them on the rolls, at least. Since I called up on impulse, I was sweating bullets, trying to remember his DOB. OK, anniversary of the landing on the moon --I can Google that --and he was 5 or 6 years older than my mom, so if I could remember which of the several years she has used as her year of birth, I could figure his out, blah blah blah. But nothing. I even mentioned that I was panicking trying to remember the DOB and SSN, and she said not to worry. Never asked a thing about my mother, who would really be my qualifying relationship.
I have the feeling that they lean toward approving people, rather than screening them out. Certainly, this didn't seem like a very thorough requirement of proof of eligibilty. I also mentioned that my father-in-law was a lieutenant in the Navy, killed on active duty when my husband was a baby, but she didn't seem to want any more info. Go figure. And she was awfully ready to take my app for a checking account. This was very different from PenFed, which seems to hold the membership app very separate from all the rest.
So I dunno, maybe I've jinxed myself by posting this, but their front door does seem to be cracked a bit. Now, if they let me in, I'll need to figure out what of their stuff I can use! If they do approve me, it will be time to go back and re-read the umpty-billion Navy FCU threads as a member, rather than as a mod!
Oh, and I pulled a full EQ about a half hour after the convo, and no activity there, either hard or soft. I recently saw a thread discussing when they pull which for what, so I need to go dig that up, I think
Thanks again!
* ponders what my career Army physician father and uncle would think if they knew I was doing this * --yikes, I would have some serious 'splaining to do, that's for sure.
My pleasure!
When you call the main number ( 888/842/6328) you are calling:
NFCU
Merrifield VA 22119
It is my understanding all applications, membership or credit products, are approved there.
btw...I have been meaning to mention, to you for some time, I sure envy your posting panache! Sure do wish you could send some my way.
