Received a letter that because of "high risk" all of my accounts at my bank of over 10 years are being closed. The issue was last week an unexpected charge (it was not supposed to be put through until later this month) went through for several thousand dollars bringing the account into negative territory. As I wasn't anticipating any deposits / withdrawls, I didn't end up logging into the account until this week and it went unnoticed until then. Once I did, I prompty deposited sufficient funds to bring it up to date.
Today, the letter arrives notifying me of their intent to close ALL of the accounts held there next week. It's after hours so I can't get in touch with anyone until the morning to see if this is correctable, but, in the mean time, I'm working on contingeancy plans in the event is not. With that in mind, I've got a few questions
1) If they do close them, all of the accounts will be current and not have any owed balances. Will that get reported to chexxsystems and cause problems?
2) If it will, how soon does that get reported? I've got accounts with other banks that I can use in the short term, but, limited use where I don't know if I want them to be my "main" bank going forward. Should I be ok or is it advisible to go open accounts at other banks right away?
3) If the bank doesn't change their stance and refuses to keep the accounts opened, would it help if I requested the accounts closed before they close it on their own?
It would be much better, IMO, if you end up closing them yourself.
They can report you to ChexSystems for being overdrawn as account abuse.
My bank allowed us to overdraw our accounts up to half of what was deposited as long as another deposit was made within 2 weeks to cover it. I did this on several occasions not realizing they were reporting it to Chexsystems each time. I was a little irratated to say the least.
They are doing this for a one time overdrawn account? Seems a bit harsh.
