Closing a Store Card

I wanted to find out if closing my Kohls store card that I have for 5 months will affect my Credit Report. The card only has a $300.00 limit.

Hello there.

Here is an excellent thread discussing the pros and cons of Closing Credit Cards.

Re: Closing a Store Card

The account remains on your CR for 10 years.  The fact that it is relatively new already impacts your AAofA.  However, closing it shouldn't have much additional impact but I would always question closing cards with no AF.  Just put it in a drawer and don't use it.

Re: Closing a Store Card

As the thread linked earlier states AAoA is not immediately impacted by closure but utilization is.

I wouldn't but it's not really about what you or I or anyone else would do.  OP needs to decide based on the OP's own priorities, preferences, goals, etc.

Well, that is precisely why people come to this site ... that is, to hear others' opinions ... it's obvious that OP will make his/her own decision. Simple.

Re: Closing a Store Card

I just closed my Wheel Works card from Credit First, and we will see what effect it would have on my credit overall. Its my lowest CL card at only 2k, and its been idle for well over a year simply because I never have use for it since purchasing and paying off my tires. I have plenty of credit from other lenders.

I don’t foresee it having any significant effect on my overall util, only about 1% I am estimating. (according to my spreadsheet)

Also, I foresee this having a net positive effect on my average revolving CL, can anyone confirm that is a lender factor?

The thing that interests me most is that this is my only "sub-prime" lender TL, and I will be interesting to see how my other bank relations change due to this "pruning" effect.

I am in the garden after all. Smiley Wink

...it's getting your score out of the range subprime lenders scavenge around in that will most likely have impact on how a potential lender sees you and the relationship (the FICOs you note seem to be out of that range).  The biggest reason, IMO, to graduate from subprime to prime cards is interest rates, AFs, miscellaneous fees, low limits, et al.  Some lenders' internal systems do look at average TL.

You see, and this is what I was thinking. USAA is one of those lenders that I believe looks at your lowest CL.

Back in mid 2013 when I opened my USAA account, I only had 2 credit cards, one at 2k CL and one at 25k CL, and they matched the 2k credit line and have refused to budge since, regardless of heavy use, PIF and perfect history.

I am hoping by making them my lowest credit limit now, they will get the hint, because they are next on the chopping block. From what I understand, they do auto CLIs right around or after the first of the year.

Ahh, fun with credit! Smiley LOL

Re: Closing a Store Card

See, that's interesting... I similarly was stuck at at $5k limit with USAA and could not get them to budge.   They told me they had "extended the maximum amount of credit" they could to me.  Fast forward, I close the account in a huff and almost immediately got a pre-approval for a better card from them.  I accepted and they gave me a $10k credit limit.  I keep getting offers for additional cards from them as well.  Go figure.

Re: Closing a Store Card

Another question I would have with this would be, can the voluntary closure of a TL help to offset the "seeking credit" perception that some of your current lenders may get from your opening several new TLs?

If so, this seems like it may be a "damage control" tactic.

Just a thought.

Anyone have any experience with this?
