I have a newborn. 4 weeks old. My first.
What is the best way to establish him a strong credit file by the time he's 18. Should I start now? if so, What can I do besides making an Authorized User on some of my credit cards.
I will greatly appreciate your thoughts on What steps I can take from now to help him build a strong credit profile.
Thank you,
Poquelin
I wouldnt go adding him just yet... Remember you may not even have those cards by that time, and AU history doesnt lock in like being the primary. And circumstances could change and you may have problems in those 18 years. Hopefully not, but it is always a possibility. To me the most important thing is to teach him all of the things you have learned here. Make a game out of it as he gets older. Showmhim about budgeting his allowance. I learned early about the working to get something, but not about credit. So if i wanted something I just saved and bought it with cash.
i would be much further along had I gotten a credit education. Best of luck to you and your newborn ![]()
Too early to do anything now. When he is 15 you can add him as an AU on an Amex to give him an early MSD date. Around that time AUs with other cards are an option too. Be careful though about actually giving a teenager the card unless you set limits on the AU card or know he can handle it.
