I would say that Unify FCU, Chartway FCU, and Langley FCU are very fair in their underwriting.

Re: Credit unions

Short answer: All of them!

But as you know, it all depends on your credit profile. 700+ should qualify you for most CCs with CUs. Also these days you may not get generous SL compare to last year same time.

Good luck.

I don't agree with that at all. I've been turned down for credit many times, and often for reasons that would not have bothered a bank at all. I was turned down for a credit card by one credit union when the score they pulled was an 829. The reason given was something like that I had too much other credit available.

OK! You do know Credit Card is a product that Credit Unions offer?! Why wouldn't they want to provide their product to members? As a business they would love to have as many customers as they can get and sell as many product as they can give.

It is true that not everyone qualify for their criteria, but that is on your profile.

Re: Credit unions

I have had great luck in opening a small savings account and maintaining a direct deposit with 4 differant credit unions.

I don't think credit unions have the best reward cards. But most offer a high credit limit and lower interest.

Credit Unions are member owned so they don't have large loan loss reserves that the big guys have, like Cap One, Amex. Chase & Citi. I have banking accounts at 4 CUs but I only have a credit card from one of them. And CU credit cards usually have lousy rewards, that one I have has 1 pt. for every $2 spent, and those rewards can only be redeem for overpriced merchandise. But it does have no fee cash advances & low APR so I only use it to transfer money to my checking for a few days a couple times a year to keep it active & give them a buck or two in interest to keep them happy. CUs are usually better for car loans & home equity, but I stick to the "big guys" for CCs with better credit limits and rewards.

Most credit unions don't have strong rewards cards, but being member-owned and not having to funnel profits to shareholders can also make them more open lenders, including for cc's.  The OP doesn't give a lot of details, but if their profile doesn't support a rewards card from one of the big lenders (or one of the unicorn CUs) and they want an unsecured card that doesn't harvest fees, a CU can be a good place to look.

Re: Credit unions

I think it's worth it to check out Penfed!

Spend some time reading the application and approvals thread.  They've been rather generous lately, easy to get in to and while I am a relatively new member, my experience has mimiced other positives comments.  No, Military Affiliation is not necessary...
