Re: Debt owed to a university

Back in August I found Prosper.  Just out of curiosity I applied. It's really quick.  They pull some kind of report (soft)-it never showed up on my CR.  My TC FAKO score was around 420 then so I'm not even going to guess what my FICO score was.   Guess what, it came up not the lowest score but the next to lowest score.  Which looked even better. I'm sure you would probably get funded because your scores was higher than mine. Confusing, but the scores seem to show up higher on Prosper than on CR's.

Let us know.  I'm thinking of trying Prosper in a month. I didn't get funded, but I had like 12 derog on my report and was at the bottom of the pole.  Things are looking up now though.

Please let us know what happens.

According to Prosper's site, they use the Experian Scorex PLUS score.
Why does my credit grade not map to my FICO, Experian, Equifax, or TransUnion score?

Prosper uses a different scoring model than the scoring model used by other credit reporting agencies. Scoring models are algorithms that predict risk for different types of loans. Prosper uses the Experian Scorex PLUSSM model which is appropriate for online lending.

The Scorex PLUS seems to be a bit different from the PLUS score:
If your credit score seems incorrect, keep in mind that there are many different credit scoring models in use. Prosper uses Experian Scorex PLUSSM model, while Experian's consumer web site uses the Experian PLUS™ model. There is a chance that your credit score from Experian's web site may be different than the credit grade you receive on Prosper.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

Yes and that makes me happy. As long as it doesn't vary too much on the low side, I'm doing pretty well, because EX is my highest score. As long as it doesn't dip more than 20 points I think I should still be in the C category; of course, if it is off on the higher side...maybe I could sneak into the B level! I set up my account, but they need to do a manual verification on the identity part, so I have to fax my driver's license and banking info.

A 5-6K loan with a "C" grade is very possible at Prosper...just remember that your APR could be high though.

Re: Debt owed to a university

Only problem is, the lenders seem to do the higher int. rate. I understand that, but the highest I could put in was 8.57 or something like that.  Unless it is a business loan (which I think you have to prove) it is 18.57. That's for Texas.

Very true! Some states have a low cap rate and TX is one of them.

Re: Debt owed to a university

I thought I would report back about my university debt situation and my Prosper experience.

Debt first...I negotiated with the school to suppress all but about $700 of the service charges, so I ended up with a $4000 balance (instead of $7600.) My Dad had offered $2000 for my wedding (like he did with my sister) and after finding out about this issue, he offered it up early to help.

I listed my loan on Prosper, but even though my EX score is decent (666 FICO last I checked and probably a bit higher when they pulled) their version (Scorex PLUS) rated me MUCH lower, putting me in the D category. I determined that current delinquencies weigh VERY heavily in their rating, because as far as I could tell that was the only difference between me and some other borrowers that were getting funded automatically. (Lenders can choose portfolios with different criteria for which loans to automatically fund...different levels of risk.)

The other thing I had going against me is that OK has a state maximum interest rate of 17.78%, which is a low starting rate. Basically Prosper said there was a low chance of me getting funded. The only thing I had control over was what I wrote in my listing. I tried to be as detailed and honest as possible and explain the one collection on my account. (Cable equipment was not returned by my former boyfriend and I didn't know about it for almost two years.) I asked friends and family to write endorsements and six of them did. I don't know how heavily that weighs into lenders' decisions.

I listed for 10 days. The first 8 were really slow. I only got to about 30%. Then the last two days, it just took off. Today, about 15 hours before my listing expired, I hit 100%! Now the lenders are outbidding each other to lower the interest rate...totally cool! In a way, it's cool that I didn't get any automatic bids, because it means that everyone who bid on my listing actually went in and read my listing and took a chance on me personally.

At the same time, my Dad offered to loan me the other $2000 if my Prosper loan didn't come through, so no matter what, I was covered. That's a great feeling!

From the research that I've done, it appears that the Prosper loan will report as an installment loan, but only to EX. If anyone knows differently, I'd love to know. EX is my highest score and having an installment loan will help that even more in the long run. After a few more inquiries drop off my EX report in July, I will research whether it would be smart to apply for the Amex Delta Skymiles card again.

If anyone has any questions about my experiences so far with Prosper, feel free to ask. So far, it has been awesome! Thanks for suggesting it!

Re: Debt owed to a university

I'm really glad you updated on your situation. I'm glad things are looking up for you, and congrats on getting the amount lowered. I am sure you'll be fine!!! I hope the interest rate does get lowered, otherwise take your father-up on his offer, and make arrangements with him -- while he won't report to a CRA, at least the rate isn't crazy high.

Continued success!!
