Dispute or not?

I wrecked our family car in September, but had GAP coverage, so that meant the GAP insurance company would pay the remainder of the car loan. There is a tremendous amount of paperwork and lots of back and forth to get the GAP taken care of.  So, when due dates came for the car loan, I asked the finance company if they were going to report me being late.  They said no, they wouldn't.  I remember asking this question more than once.  They always had the same answer no, we won't report.  Well they did report it.  The GAP insurance finally paid off in January.   Equifax shows 90 days late as of February, then paid off and closed.   I'm just now finding out about this because I got declined for a credit card from a credit union.

The last time I checked my credit score was August of 05 when I refinanced our house.  Score was in the 780-790 range.

I'm not nearly as concerned about the credit score as I am the "auto-enhanced credit score" or whatever they call it.   If I don't dispute, I assume the 90 days late will be on there for what ten years?

Appreciate any advice.

Re: Dispute or not?

If you don't dispute, it will be there for 7 years (ish).

Have you tried a letter to the CO asking them to change it?
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

Re: Dispute or not?

I just found out about it.  Can the finance company change it?  So far, the only supervisor I talked to was clueless. I've definitely got time to tackle this thing.

Re: Dispute or not?

I always tell people to get the lender to fax you in writing that is was not late/ would not be late/ not your responsibility. Something like that. Then after you have the letter if they don't fix it, you have the upper hand in a dispute to fix it your self with out them. What ever happens, get it in writing! It's never too late to get it in writing.

Re: Dispute or not?

Any advice for disputing?  All I know is to not dispute via annualcredit report.

Re: Dispute or not?

Just dispute directly with the CRAs as "never late".
