Getting old closed accounts removed

Hello, new member here and I just started toady with pulling my account.  My score is a 753 but it says I have TOO MANY credit accounts.  (42)  After looking at the report, about 25 have been paid off and closed.  Some dating back as far as the 1990's.  If they are closed and paid, would it not benifit me to have them removed?  Any help is appreciated.

You don't want to remove old closed accounts. They are helping more than they are hurting, unless they are derogatory.

They should drop off 10 years after they were closed
The slide from grace is really more like gliding
And I've found the trick is not to stop the sliding
But to find a graceful way of staying slid

If they are that old probably helping. They will drop off all on their own. I'd keep them. I am just guessing that new FICO 08 will allow for more than 29 accounts anyway. Either way I'd keep em.

Re: Getting old closed accounts removed

What I understand from your post you are somewhat concerned about “Too many credit accounts”.  First off, with your score of 753 you really have nothing to worry about.

Do not be concerned about the closed accounts; they are not hurting your score. However, based on the number of accounts you stated are closed (about 25) that leaves you with 17 open accounts which in my opinion are a little high.

Are you carrying any balances on these 17 open accounts??

If so, you may want to consider, if possible, pay some of these to a zero balance and sock drawer them and rotate them out about every three months so they will show some activity. Have these rotated cards report a small balance and pay them in full prior to your next due date to avoid paying interest.

There are many different opinions as to how many should be sock drawer, so you will have to make your own decision as to what best suits your personal situation. I would recommend that you do not close any of these accounts. You also have the option to consolidate some of these cards with the same issuer only if they will allow you to transfer your line of credit.  If you decided to consolidate some of these cards double check the APR’s and consolidate to the lowest one.

Just a few suggestions.

Re: Getting old closed accounts removed

Thank you all for the good advice.  I do have 17 accounts open, but only have a balnce on 5 of them.  It's just my report stated I had too many acoounts so I thought I would ask.  Thanks again....
