I opened up an Amex Gold approximately a month ago. I added my spouse as an AU. We made a large purchase and immediately paid the balance in order to earn the introductory rewards bonus. Then we made a few other small purchases. All of a sudden, one day my spouse's card is declined for a small purchase. Then my card is declined for a few small purchases. I initiate a chat with AMEX to see what is going on and they refer me to the fraud department. I call the number for Fraud, and after authenticatiing and verifying my personal information, they tell me that they spoke to the "true account holder" and they closed the account. Whaaaaaaat?? I never told anyone from Amex to close the account. I tried to get more information, but they kept saying that was all they could tell me. Has anyone ever had an issue like this occur when they cancelled the account and wouldn't even tell you a reason??
I really confused as to why they closed it. They won't even let me reapply. I really don't understand why they can't tell me a valid reason.

Heck you may be the resipriant of fraud. This is something I’d wait for the letter and maybe ask the advise of an attorney on. Could be as simple as a mixed file problem, or as bad as somebody stole your info. In any event I wouldn’t let it go.
Hm...this is a new one. Maybe the large purchase and immediate pay off spooked them somehow? I'm sure you'll get a letter documenting why, but I would call the fraud department and inquire again.

ok. You are being quite confusing. You state that they told you they spoke to the true account holder and that that person requested the account closed. Yet you still go on to state that they won't even tell you a reason. Which one is it? It cannot be both. Clearly there is a fraud or just a mix up issue. I've never heard of this before. But doubt it is due to the payout. Unless you bought a bunch of gift cards with the card or something fishy that may have seemed fraudulent to them then I doubt they closed you out for no good reason.
