How to dispute correctly on Experian ?

Goodmorning Fico Fam ,

So weird situation here and not sure if this is in the correct section. So i apologize mods in advance.

So i paid off a auto loan back in aug and TU,EQ have updated that account as 0 balance paid in full 100% but for some reason Experian  is still showing only 11% paid off and last updated on july 31 . I tried to contact Experian  and no matter what number i pushed on the phone could not get through. In 30 min, i will be contacting the bank when they open but just wanted to get in touch with my ficofam first to get any input.

I was thinking on disputing online but with so many options to pick from i got a little confused and i definitely do not want to pick the wrong one and mess up my report. The options include ..

Affected by co-19

Payment Never Late

Not mine

Account Paid in Full *

Account Closed *

Unauthorized charges

Ex Spouse account

Balance Incorrect *

Belongs to Primary

Corporate account

Other Reason

Belongs to some1 with same name

Identity Theft

Add Statement

So the ones i added a * i feel would be correct to select but i cant select all 3. This is on my report and my DW as well. On hers TU,EQ are reporting correctly like mine. Only issue is with Experian .

To add... in September i got a new auto loan with same bank and this new account is being reported to TU,EQ but you guessed it.. not to Experian  at all . Not sure what to do here guys . Just a little confused on how to handle this correctly .

I will say that all my credit cards are being updated under Experian  so no issues with the credit cards , im starting to think that bank is at fault somehow where they sent my file to TU,EQ but not EX ?

Sorry for long post i thank you in advance with any input. Have a good day.

Re: How to dispute correctly on Experian ?

It should be either Account Paid in Full or Balance Incorrect.

I would definately choose Account Paid, in Full, as it is more specific.

Balance Incorrect could apply broadly to any balance, either $0 or some postive amount, that is asserted to be inaccurate.

It could apply to both open and closed, and delinquent or non-delinquent debt balances.

Account Paid in Full is more specific, as it asserts that the account is, by definition, both at $0 balance and closed.

Regardless, I would definately call the creditor/bank before actually filing a dispute, and make an informal inquiry as to why they have not yet updated.  They may well agree that it is only an admin oversight, and promptly report the necessary update without need for a formal dispute.

+1

Check with Bank first, see if they just messed up somewhere along the way. If they still don't resolve it, then dispute with EX, while providing any proof you have of the account being paid off (pay off letter, etc.).

It sounds like this bank perhaps no longer reports to EX?  They can choose to only report to some or no agencies (I believe).

Perhaps that is the lack of update to EX since you say your new loan only reports to TU and EQ. I had a loan that previously only reported to TU.

Regardless, they still need to fix the account that was previously reported to EX even if they no longer report to them. I would contact the bank first to give them a chance to rectify that. I always feel like disputing can get messy.

If you still need to dispute or decide to, I agree with @RobertEG , "PIF" would be the most specific reason.

Good luck!

Re: How to dispute correctly on Experian ?

Thank you everyone for the feedback.

Just got off the phone with management at the bank and she assured me that they do report to all 3 and for me to file a dispute with experian so that experian can then request any info from my bank. I then asked her how do i dispute with experian to report my new auto loan that is not showing ...and she did not have an answer for me . So for now I will work on getting the first problem solved then figure out how to get new account reporting . Thank you guys I appreciate it for the advice .

For the first problem, I suppose if they told you to dispute, then go ahead and do so, though I would call again and perhaps try to get to their "credit reporting" department first before initiating a dispute.

For the second problem, you can't dispute something that isn't there. So again, you need to speak to the bank's "credit reporting" department or equivalent, and asking them to report to EX.

While they need to uodate the reporting to EX, absolutely, they are not required to report to all 3 bureaus. They can choose who they want to report to. It may be an oversight, but if they no longer report, you cannot make them.

You need to speak to someone at the bank that knows who they report to. EX cannot dispute the bank for not reporting. There is no entry to dispute, so literally nothing to dispute. That is between you and the bank.

Re: How to dispute correctly on Experian ?

Just to update...

After disputing .. experian ended up just deleting the auto loan account for me and the wife due to banks no response.  I would have loved the positive info for our reports but just got to move foward . Thanks for all the help guys . The good thing is we dont have a 13k balance just sitting there . Everyone have a good day and stay safe ! ✌
