Is there a downside to Freezing these reports?
For what purpose(s) would I need to unfreeze them? Opening a bank account? Credit card?

anything you apply for that might need to verify your identity including a bank account, credit card, phone postpaid subscription, rental application, job application etc.
while technically safer, my personal belief that freezing secondary reports is a bit much unless you've been an actual victim of identity theft before and freezing the big 3 and chex is more than enough to stop most attacks

With LexisNexis, there's a suppression and a freeze.
A suppression doesn't affect anything about a FCRA purpose. Suppressing my LexisNexis report has had no effect on rental, car insurance, etc.
I think everyone should figure out a way to suppress LexisNexis, maybe not freeze, but suppress. A freeze slams it shut for FCRA (lending/verification purposes), but a suppression generally makes it unavailable to data brokers.
A lot of these people finder and employment blackballing companies gather data from multiple sources, including just straight up buying it from LexisNexis, and you may show up in LexisNexis if lawyers are looking for you so their client can sue you. It's one of the ways lawyers can find you, so for non-FCRA, it's unlikely anything good will come from not suppressing LexisNexis.
Never found freezing any of the purveyors of credit and information gathers was a problem. All have been "frozen" for years and not any different than unfreezing a regular CB.
Also, have not run into any need to unfreeze Lexis Nexis or Innovis in most cases. There are others like a bureau for telephones and electronics and several others which I froze as I had a mobile number stolen right under my nose.
Personal choice. Sleep nights knowing the information gathers are frozen. Will add, if I was going to steal information, the Early Warning Services has virtually 100% of my life and it would be the one. Everything was contained in their data base for me. Scary!!! Many financials use them such as US Bank, USAA, Chase and I could go on.
More reports to freeze. Sounds like a good idea.
PayPal would decline you..
