Old School Debt

My other bad egg is $800 owed to my old college that, frankly, I didn't know about until recently when I saw it was on my EX report.  I believe it is showing up incorrectly on my EX report--with DOLA as 2003, when really it should have been 2000, which is when I graduated and would have apparently broken the repayment "agreement".  (I think this is just old bookstore charges--which they'd let you bill to Mom and Dad AFTER they'd credited your account.)  This debt is NOT reporting on EQ or TU.

I want to pay this debt.  How is it best to go about things?  Do I:

-Contact my old college, explain the situation, and say I'd like to PIF but will they pretty please delete the credit reporting on me?

or

-Contact EQ, dispute the debt because it's past the credit reporting timeline, and then once it's off, contact my old college saying I'd like to PIF.

Any advice is appreciated.  TIA.

Re: Old School Debt

I recently went through something similar:  Dispute it with CRA's and contact the school asking for a PFD if paid in full.

Most of the time they will do it as it is not in their interest to mess with alumni....

Re: Old School Debt

Thanks, tpg!

Sorry in advance for  how long this is.  I just want to get out all the information because I really need help on what to do next!

So, today I called Experian (it has since fallen off the other two) and disputed the date.  The EX rep flat out told me the date of status is the date of my last payment to the OC.  In my view, this would have been in early 2000--this is when I graduated.  I have not paid them any money since.

I then called my alma mater, and stated that I never knew I had this debt until I pulled my credit report.  I told them that I would happily pay the debt right then over the phone, but explained to her that I have an issue with the fact that it is showing up on my credit report.  They are reporting to EX that the date of status is listed as March 2003, which I believe to be incorrect because this amount is from 2000--the year I graduated college.  I told the woman on the phone that Experian just told me that "date of status" is actually the date of my last payment OR the date the account went delinquint which would have been in 2000 when I apparently "ignored" the final bill--which would have come BEFORE graduation in May.

The rep from the bursar's office told me that I was flat-out incorrect.  She claims the date of status is correctly listed because March of '03 is the date they charged off the account, and they still have two more years to report.  She says "my wordage is off," and that date of status/last payment is up to THEM, when the creditor lists the charge off and starts reporting.  I then asked her what the charges even were, and she stated that she "would have no way of knowing without going through my file, which would take forever."  I asked her if they would be willing to delete the tradeline, since I never knew about the debt until recently, and was ready to happily pay the amount over the phone.  She flat out refused.  When I asked to speak to a superviser, and she said her manager was busy but she would take down my number.  I gave her my CC to pay the bill (I had to because at this point, I had technically NOT graduated), reiterated that I wanted to a call back from her manager, and stated that I would dispute this with the CRAs--which she said I had "every right to do, but it would not change anything." She also insisted they would not reage the account.  A bit later, she called me back to say that she caught her manager in between meetings, and her manager "said she had no time to even deal with this today, but remained firm that March of 2003 is the correct date."

So--what do I do now?  Who is right?  Me--I think that the date of status/last payment is sometime in 2000, 30 days after that due date on the final bill passed.  Or my alma mater--who states the date of status/last payment?

And what do I do now???

Thanks in advance for your help.  I'm kind of freaking out over this.  My scores were over the 700s until Midland started posting for an account that is just under 7 years old, and now I'm in the 600s.  I just want to get everything off my report and I truly believed this should no longer be reporting.

Re: Old School Debt

Also, wanted to clarify--the rep at my alma mater stated I was wrong because this was a "past due amount," which means it doesn't matter when the bills went out, the date of status/last payment is listed when THEY charge it off.  I don't understand the difference?
