Hi, a few days ago I went online and opted out for receiving credit offers etc. I did the 5 year opt out. My question is will this prevent anyone from doing a soft inquiry on me? I don't really want to stop all soft inquiries, just wanted to keep people from doing it unannounced. I've read on here that it's a good idea to opt-out. Plus I thought by doing this it would give me 5 years to work on my FICO scores before I receive any more offers. Thoughts?
I wanted to post here so I can see what everyone is saying about this, I have no idea what you mean by Opt-Out so I'm curious. I mean sounds like your saying that their is some sort of list or something that your name is being put on so that credit card companies will not send you offers is that correct?
It will prevent the CRAs from selling your information for promotional offers of credit, insurance, etc....
It won't prevent your existing creditors from being able to do a soft pull, nor will it stop CAs from being to pull your reports.
So it's kind of like a do not call list but for credit cards? Hum I had no idea this exhisted how do I do it? I think this is something I would be intrested in.
Dang you guys are fast I just posted and then seen the link so I 'm editing my reply thank you!!
Thanks for the replies folks. One more question... Since I'm opted out, does this prevent me from getting any pre-approval popups like on WFNNB backed sites? Such as Macy's, Vic. Secret, Buckle etc? Or would those still work if I accepted an offer and they needed to do a soft pull?

No, it won't stop companies from acquiring your information via other channels, like tracking your spending/shopping habits via brower cookies, etc...
All it does is prevent the CRAs from selling your information to companies....
Awesome pizzadude, thanks for the info. Definitely sounds like I made the right decision in doing this.
i think it also prevents you going to a prequal site say cap one or amex of that sort and them not having any record of you. i opted out it was simple and easy and i believe my tu report confirms im opted out
Yah, I know my EQ report shows --> ALERT(s): File Blocked For Promotional Purposes. But I've not checked my others to see if it's there.
