Awww. My heart bleeds cause she has to do some work. Wonder what she would have said if she recieved your lawyers letter.
Hey guys. Got some bad news. I'm also dealing with another Collections that was due to ID Theft. I thought it was over, though. I got a letter in the mail today.
In 2019, my Mother used my SSN and DOB to get SpectrumTV in my name and didn't pay the bill. I didn't know this until a few weeks ago when it appeared as Collections. I disputed it with Spectrum and they requested a ID Theft form. I filled it out and sent it in. I also found an Xfinity account my sister did in early 2023 that was close to collections. It's a family affair, trust me.
I sent two ID Theft Affidavits off at the same time for the same reason. A member of my family using my SSN unknowingly. Well, Xfinity happily closed the account once they reviewed the documents. Spectrum sent me a letter basically saying since it was a family member then it wasn't ID Theft, that it was a civil matter and recommended the police. I already told them the police refused to investigate.
So. Im.stuck with a Collections that can't be considered ID Theft by Spectrum when Xfinity happily closed theirs. I guess all second rate companies are the same.
I have two options. 1. Pay the settlement they offered ($300.00) but only if I get something in writing for Pay for delete.
2. Go the CFPB/Attorney route, though with the Attorney it may not be worth it for a few hundred bucks.
Today. I'm heading the the Little Bighorn Custer Memorial. I won't let this get me down. I've been waiting 3 months to go!
That's a nasty twist.....mom certainly didn't help and depending on which route you take she could get into a little bit of trouble or not, idk but something to think about I suppose.
Going on this trip is probably a good thing in more ways than one. Hopefully when you come back you'll be refreshed and ready to take it on.
Have fun and be safe!

Unfortunately, unless you decide to press charges against your mom, I don't think you'll get anywhere with spectrum, cfpb, or an atty. I would negotiate pfd.
Ah, the wonders of family dynamics. I have some of this sort also from long ago.
On the plus side, this is a prime opportunity to clarify with family that if they need help, ask for help... so it's possible to properly manage any involved debt/bills and not kill the goose laying the eggs.
Goodwill letters and if possible accompanied with support letters from family.
I'd look more into Rectum. Ooops. I mean Spectrum. They had to show ID to open the account. Go to a local store and see f they can pull up the start of service and who signed the contract. In person does wonders than some voice and the phone. have fun at your event.

I am sorry your are going through this with your family members. I hope you find a good resolution to your immediate problem.
To prevent this from hapening in the future, as there seems to be a reapeating pattern, I would suggest freezing or locking access to your credit reports with each CRA. This should stop them from opening accounts in your name when credit checks are required, such as with Spectrum. Also, this could help if your personal info gets compromised and winds up on the dark web or in bad hands.
Also, if you do decide to report it, the FTC's fraud department can help you file a report. The government website for this is:
Good luck and I wish you the best in dealing with this.
